Splash!
The water flew far from the ripples, peppering Naomi's face and arms as she laughed, bringing her forearms up to protect her eyes as she watched from between them, eyes focused on the sandy blonde torpedo under the water, sinking down to the bottom before powering up to pop out of the water in front of Naomi to splash her with a sizeable wave.
"How was that?"
Naomi pursed her lips, sinking back down to her neck as she floated beside Eve. "Well... You probably could've jumped further. 9 out of 10 on the splash though." She said, giggling quietly at the distasteful face Eveline made. "Well I thought I did pretty good." She responded, an undertone of amusement clinging to the words like a stowaway, just to be discovered by Naomi's ears.
"Well you're gonna need to work on it to beat me." Naomi responded, before ducking down, disappearing under the illuminated water, the vague light of the moon glinting off the deep end while the fluorescents gave the rest a light blue tinge. It was hard to follow Naomi as she powered through the water, coming up on the other side of the pool, sticking out her tongue before disappearing back under, her the vague blurry shape slipping under Eveline to pop up behind her, Naomi's arms catching onto Eveline's shoulders to keep herself afloat.
"Hi."
That voice in her ear, so light and rich, as soft as silk but with a characteristic ring that only Naomi's voice had. Eveline quietly forced down her swelling feelings with prejudice, hoping the rather cool water would help soothe her blush. "Hi yourself..." She responded, the fake pout audible in her words alone. Naomi giggled, shaking her head. While not as much of a mess as Eveline, she felt her own feelings bubbling up under the surface, threatening to heat up and burn her ears red. A big part of her thoughts were currently dedicated to the feeling of her bare arms wrapped around Eve’s neck, the soft slopes of collarbones and the faint adam’s apple, the chlorine scented hair and smoke tinged skin.
And then the two separated, Naomi's arms slipping from Eve's shoulders as she idly drifted back, kicking off the pool's wall to float in front of Eveline on her back, watching the other woman with intrigue. She couldn't help her eyes, they traced Eve's cute little button nose, the rather soft jawline that met that long neck... The soft cherry dusting on her cheeks and over her freckle spotted nose...
Those sweet pink rose colored lips she wished so desperately to bite.
She blamed the blush on the chill of the water, shaking any and all romantics out of her head. They were friends. Galpals. BFF's, whatever stupid name you wanted to use. And that sucked.
Eveline blinked hard a couple times, she didn't really believe her eyes as she looked over Naomi's face, tracing the long black ponytail through the water up to her face, the light red in her friend's cheeks. She didn't... She didn't feel the same way, did she? No, of course not. It was probably just the cold or the drinks they had earlier. She forced herself to stop staring, quite the feat considering how easy on the eyes Naomi was, floating in the neon water, the light blue contrasting heavily with the dark shadows of the stars.
Eveline cleared her throat, glancing to the side as she shut her eyes, taking a long deep breath despite the droplets that clung to the tip of her nose, shaking her head to loose the matted hair from behind her ears, staring into the water.
"W..." She cleared her throat again. "Well? Gonna prove you're better?"
A smile broke out on Naomi's face, lighting up her eyes like a candle in the windowsill. She swam past Eveline, climbing out of the pool in one fluid hop and twist. "Thought you'd never ask." She responded, oblivious to Eveline's eyes being drawn to the cute bob in Naomi's steps, the little sway of her soggy ponytail, the slightly off sway of her hips from when she had banged her knee against a table out of laughter. She shook her head, remembering she was trying to suppress her feelings, instead trying to take on a critical eye as Naomi got to a satisfactory distance, spinning around to glare down the pool's edge like a bull.
"Here goes!"
Off she went, both feet landing by the pool as she springboarded back up into the air, tucking her knees in as she tilted back just a bit, hitting the water with a massive splash, throwing a small wave in Eveline's direction. Eveline turned away, water assaulting her back as the turmoil now plaguing the previously calm waters lapped at her arms. Eveline turned back once the makeshift rain had stopped, watching Naomi swim back up, throwing a fist in the air. "Whoo!" Naomi exclaimed, shaking the water from her face. "Now that's how you cannonball, babe!"
The two froze, what was that last word..?
Naomi cleared her throat, feeling her heat trying to escape her chest and climb into her throat, but she swallowed it back down, trying to act like nothing was off, ducking back down into the water, leaving Eveline floating by the poolside, a little confused, a little flustered and a little giddy. Eveline shook her head for what felt like the 70th time, before sinking under the water herself.
Time to play it off.
There was nothing between them. They were friends. They were girl friends. Not girlfriends.
Right..?
