Maria was always a bit of a troubled kid. Her parents had never been on great terms, neither had they been on great terms with their relatively unwanted child. So, when her mother passed prematurely to a work accident, her father had been quick to rid himself of the 6 year old. Alone and confused, Maria was left at an orphanage, and in Asle, no orphanage is all too pretty. After establishing herself as somebody to not mess with, her rough-housing finally coming in handy, As she grew up, she became more defensive, a year passed and Maria had grown cold, mostly keeping to herself.
And then she made a friend.
James had been a little like Maria, both just wanting to keep their heads relatively low and get out, get on with their lives, live under their own roof and not have to fight to pull their food from some other beast's jaws. The two made a quiet alliance, James bent the rules for them, Maria did the lifting. It quickly grew to a juvenile friendship, developing into a sort of siblinghood. The two became inseparable, even as they moved out finally. Maria took up work in a bakery, mostly working dough, bought herself an apartment and lived relatively comfortably for a couple years.
Now in her early 20's, she's found herself in a small predicament.
"I don't want to know I'm not capable of making it out alive."
James had a lot in common with Maria when he met her. He'd been a year older, but he'd spent some time in the orphanage before Maria came. His parents had wanted a girl.
James had been surprised to see a relatively level-headed kid, one that was more interested in getting out alive without stepping on too many toes without reason, and he appreciated it. Respected it even, and he saw the strength in numbers. While Maria had spent time with her sports and doing menial labor to square off little favors and good sides from the adults, he'd spent his time reading in the pitiful library and scribbling away in textbooks and on assignments.
It helped, James got the pair through many sticky situations when it came to being sharp between the ears, while Maria saved James' ass when it came to brawn. Even once they got out, finally, he got a job rather quickly as an accountant. However, when Maria came to him, asking if he finally wanted to escape, asking for help, he couldn't say no.
