First of all, I did some initial sketches based off of my moodboards and research. I wanted to focus on blocking out shapes and colours rather than creating any real reference, and so these sketches are extremely rough, and not accurate at all. I wanted to begin by exploring the different perspectives, angles, and basic ideas.
Of course my basis is going to be a temple of some kind, however I am undecided on whether it should be inside or outside the temple. I also need to consider what my interactive element is going to be, and how it can play a relevant and interesting part in my environment. I'd like to play around with potentially having some kind of interactive podium or statue, which maybe moves or says something. I also wanted to emphasise that the sky is made of clouds, all the way past the tips of the pillars, and so sketched out this other concept (below).
I really liked the idea of having some kind of statue or bust as the centrepiece of my environment, and potentially as my interactive piece. Since one of my main inspirations for this project is the Greco-Roman mythosphere, along with Greco-Roman architecture, I think that having a dramatic marble statue in my cloud temple would be an interesting concept to explore. You can see in some of my initial sketches (seen above) that I had already started to play around with this idea, and so I wanted to develop it a little further. I sketched 3 different ideas for this character in photoshop, as you can see to the right and below.
One of my sketches turned out quite
feminine, one of them looks more Christian, and one looks more like a standard Greco-Roman statue. When drawing these sketches, I kept in mind the different influences I want to include. I have taken inspiration from dreamcore with wings, since angelic/winged imagery is popular with that kind of aesthetic. Going back to my primary inspiration of Greek architecture, I included an idealistic body type in all of my sketches, and a toga. While I do like my feminine sketch's unique wing placement, I think it is more reminiscent of modern fantasy than of classical architecture; the cherub-like sketch has a similar issue of not fitting the Greco-Roman theme.
I think that my favourite of the three sketches in the one shown below; I like the simplicity and classic aesthetic of this statue, since not only will it be easier to model, but it is more reminiscent of classical architecture. I also like how this statue has a laurel leaf crown, as it is a sign of status and honour in ancient Roman culture, and also shows up a lot in renaissance paintings of Greco-Roman deities.
I absolutely love this idea, and I would really like to look more into ancient Greco-Roman symbolism and style, and potentially into who this statue could be depicting. Also, I thought it might be interesting to include some kind of insignia on a clasp or necklace; this could be an area to research.
This is probably my most developed idea as of now. The colour scheme and rounded shapes are reminiscent of the childlike aesthetics I looked into, whereas the marbled grey and white is more similar to architecture. The entire environment has a sort of dreamlike quality to it, and the light shining down into the environment has a lot of potential to add to the atmosphere; it could be moving, or slightly changing in hue and shape, to give the illusion of moving clouds. The statue, while a little out of place colour wise in this environment, looks very dramatic and dynamic sitting in the middle of the environment, and gives an air of mystery and ancient allure to the entire scene, in my opinion.
