Everyone should have their own paper and ink Bible.
I today's digital age of easy access and ubiquitous technological innovation, it is easy to fall into the trap of storing everything on the cloud. This is very convenient, but there are definite drawbacks to this practice.
You are dependent on connectivity to access your data.
You are dependent on the service providers to store and access your data.
You are dependent on The State to allow you to access your data.
You are dependent on the worldwide community not to disrupt any of the above conditions.
Your data is subject to manipulation by entities other that you...
Of all the things listed above, the last one is the most concerning to me. When you hold a book in your hands, you can rest assured that it contains the same information, in the same format, in the same language, and is using the same words and illustrations as it did when it was printed, There is no question about any of these things when it is a physical copy in your possession. The same can not be said of your online digital library. Outside actors have the capability of changing your data and or denying you access to it. The same is true of services you may rely on to provide information to you.
With a Bible this is even more concerning. Denominations have formed and split because of the interpretation of just a few verses in the Bible. Imagine what kind of havoc would be caused by the digital corruption of the words of God, A changed word here and there and soon the theology changes. Even if the content is not changed, you are not guarantied to be able to access it. With a book in your hand, they must physically remove it from you to accomplish these goals.
We live in troubled times. There are wars and rumors of wars throughout the world. The earthly powers of this age have no love for Christ or the truth. There have already been book burnings in the past. How easy would it be for some State level actor to deny access to the Bible on a national level, punishable by force of law. Free Speech is under attack throughout the world, and here at home, like it has not been in generations. We should be prepared for attacks on our faith and denials of our hope. The ultimate cause of these troubles will certainly be working towards the denial of access to and corruption of the words of God. Our "adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
Be Strong Brethren. Be Prepared. Be Vigilant.
"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen."
I Peter 5:6-11 (NASB)
