The City of Tshwane has witnessed a heartbreaking rise in violence against women and children from brutal murders near the railway lines, to reports of rapes in schools and communities, and, most recently, the devastating fire at Eersterust Secondary School. These events are not isolated. They reflect a broader crisis of unsafe public spaces, limited accountability, and systemic neglect where women, children, and communities live in daily fear.
The 2025 16 Days of Activism Campaign:
Each year, from 25 November to 10 December, South Africans join the global call to end violence against women and children. This year, Voice It In Action will host its 16 Days of Activism – “Voice It In Action: Safety, Justice, and Sustainable Futures” campaign, launching on 24 November 2025 at Eersterust Secondary School. Our goal is to raise awareness while driving tangible, sustainable change combining activism, education, and infrastructure development to rebuild safety and hope in the City of Tshwane.
Compound Challenges in the City of Tshwane:
2025 has revealed disturbing trends not just in Tshwane but in various parts of the country:
Brutal murders of women, with bodies found in shallow graves and on railway lines near Watloo Station some burned beyond recognition.
Reports of rape and sexual assault near railway lines and within school premises.
Unsafe spaces due to vandalized or broken perimeter fencing, enabling criminal activity.
The Eersterust Secondary School fire (8 September 2025) a tragic reminder of how unsafe conditions endanger learners and staff.
These realities have eroded trust and security within communities and highlight the urgent need for integrated responses that combine safety infrastructure, education, justice, and sustainable development.
Our Pillars: “Voice It In Action”
Safety and Justice: Rebuild the Watloo Station and Eersterust Secondary School perimeter walls. Creating safer environments where learners, women, and residents can move freely without fear.
Sustainable Education and Development: Empower learners and youth through safety education, awareness drives, and capacity-building workshops. Promoting prevention through education and community vigilance.
Sustainable Economic Opportunities: Link awareness activities to job creation and youth development. In collaboration with relevant stakeholders and partners, local artisans and young people will be employed in rebuilding the walls and supporting logistics — ensuring that activism also creates livelihoods.
A Call for Collaborative Action:
This initiative speaks directly to Pillar 2 of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF (Prevention and Rebuilding
Social Cohesion) while also addressing pillars on safety, justice, and economic empowerment. It represents a transformative and innovative approach to community-led prevention and restoration.
“I believe this initiative is a powerful and innovative approach to GBVF prevention, one that bridges awareness and action through sustainability.” — Kgothatso Moloto
We are committed to working with various entities and strategic partners to restore safety, accountability, and hope in our communities. Together, we can transform the 16 Days of Activism from an annual campaign into a year-round movement for justice, empowerment, and healing.
