For this project, I explored how social media impacts society, which includes me.
Was I surprised by my results from the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA" quiz? Not really.
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
While sometimes I do think I'm on social media more that I should be, it's not something that is invading my daily life and despite my results, I feel myself being off my phone more that I was before so I'd still call that some improvement.
The most interesting statistic in the articles was the growing amount of people who use YouTube. I was never someone who watched YouTube a lot when I was younger but nowadays I always watch a video even when I'm doing something else. I enjoy hearing people talk and I even go to sleep with a YouTube video playing in the background. I'm not sure if others are on YouTube for the same reason, but I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one watching videos.
In my opinion, social media can both negatively and positively affect society. From personal experience, I've connected with friends and have even made friends because of social media. I'm able to have conversations and post media to connect with others, which was the original reason for social media. On the other hand, I tend to see a lot of hate on social media, which is not something that I want to see. Personally, the pros outweight the cons.
I'm on social media more than I'd like the admit. Although I have recently found a balance between social media and spending time with no screen, there are still some ways I could use social media less.
