=Pedagogic Material=
Since 2013, the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), located in Mindelo, São Vicente, has conducted over 30 lectures and practical classes to train biology students in various skills. These skills include handling wild birds and collecting biometric data for population demography and survival studies, biological sampling techniques for assessing trophic ecology and individual health, and deploying, retrieving, and processing data from individual tracking devices like GPS devices. This theoretical component was often complemented by practical fieldwork. In addition to academic participants, staff from the National Directorate for the Environment of Cape Verde, including senior technicians and nature wardens, maritime police, and technicians from Non-Governmental Organizations, also received training in these workshops.
Recent years have seen an increase in the production of educational materials and their use in the aforementioned theoretical-practical courses, primarily due to activities under the ALCYON project. Within this project, university professors at Uni-CV have received training (train-the-trainer programs) and support in creating teaching materials for inclusion in their courses, particularly in the subjects of “Marine Ecology” and “Biodiversity Management and Conservation.”
The book titled “Seabird Biodiversity and Human Activities,” in which I contributed to two chapters, serves as an educational tool. It aims to enlighten students about practical instances where marine top predators act as sentinels of changes in the marine and coastal environment. Specifically, it delves into the intricate relationship between human activities in these areas, such as the harvesting of marine resources through fisheries or the utilization of the marine environment as an energy source, exemplified by offshore windfarms.
