There are many locations for put ins and safe paddles. Follow the maps below to choose the best spot for your paddle.
Bucks Harbor, Machiasport
A semi sheltered tour around a working lobster harbor and some small islands scattered around Machias Bay. Easy carry in and a parking lot. No facilities available. Great location to spot seals, Eagles and the very occasional shark or whale visitor.
Roques Bluff Beach, Roques Bluff
Wonderful parking lot with great facilities with toilets and picnic areas, however beach access is across the road and across the beach. Another semi-sheltered area that meanders around several coves and a single pristine island on the East side of Englishmans Bay. There is a paved ramp boat launch at the very end of Schoppee point rd with parking but no facilities.
Machias river
A marvelous paddle directly from town down the river will take you directly out to sea. Along the way you at high tide you will spot seals, Eagles, Ospreys, Egrets, and a myriad of other birds and wildlife. The tide comes all the way up river and has a strong current if traveling in the opposite direction. Along the way you will encounter several quiet small beaches perfect for a picnic or some picture taking. Although there is plenty of parking and beautiful dock for put in, there are no facilities except a well deserved piece of pie at Helen's restaurant upon your return.
Sandy River Beach, Jonesport
The West side of Englishmans Bay will take you up and down the entire point going all the way to Jonesport and Beals island. Along the way you will pass several small islands, but use caution at low tide as most are connected by a sand bar. In Jonesport you can find the US Coast Guard and Beals Island, which connects to the Great Wass Island preserve. These 3 large islands could keep you busy for a whole week exploring all the wonderful coves and beaches. There is a small parking lot across from the beach with a toilet, however the carry in is a quite narrow path between cottages.
Beals Island, Jonesport
Smack in the middle of a working harbor yet immediately on one of Maine's wonderful ocean islands. There are several small coves and beaches to explore around this island. Pay attention to weather reports and wind conditions.
