I go over the strategies for teaching ESL Online & give you examples!
1- SMART Interview from your phone (teach 1 slide)
2A- Computer "Smart Demo" with 3 Slides (They alternate slides with applicants)
2B- Computer 5 minute Demo (Live or Recorded) "Me, Myself & I- Who am I?"
This is new! The easiest option as far as submitting your demo as you do it from your phone from the VIPKid Teacher app. You submit answers to a 5 question quiz, and record 2.5 minute DEMO video. The slide you teach varies each time, so that is why I don't have the slide available for you to view ahead of time. You will watch a couple quick training videos and then answer the 5 questions on those videos and then you film a video of you teaching the slide they provide. There is a video of a teacher teaching that slide for you to see before you record.
You teach 3 slides that follow the IPA Format. Introduce, Practice & Apply. These slides change each time, just like the SMART DEMO from your phone, so you aren't sure which slides you will get before the demo. See this video for instruction on the IPAED format in the level 2 lessons!
You teach the new word. Circle it on the screen. Use actions to depict the meaning (TPR) while stating it then cup your ear for the student to repeat.
Then state it again with a prop or another visual. Cup your ear for the student to repeat.
Underline the sentence. You can allow the child to try and read, and if they struggle you read and then cup your ear for them to repeat:) You can state the sentence 1-2+ times depending on the student's needs.
You are going to practice the word in context. You want to bring this slide to life by having a puppet or prop to model the sentence. You could have the puppet pop up and underline the first line for them to read. If they can't read it you read it and then cup your ear for the student to repeat. Then underline the next line and gesture towards yourself for "I." Wait for the student to read. If they cannot then you read and have them repeat. Then state, "Circle 'here.'"(You are making a circle with your finger in the air). Make sure they get both and then give them a reward! "You get a candy, Ava!" Show it to the screen, give a high five and move on!
They can do it on their own! You want to ask them a question to elicit the answer such as, "Where is your nose?" Then underline the sentence and state, "drag and drop the word." Have them read and then cheer when they drag the correct one.
*You can also pretend like they make a mistake and correct it in a positive way. I.E. They put the wrong word. You model dragging the correct word, and read the sentence with actions for them to repeat. "My nose is here." Cup your ear to elicit the correct sentence after you. Make sure they are doing the actions as well by pointing to your hands and then gesture towards the child. You can get close to the camera to show you are pointing to your nose etc. Have FUN with it!!
You want your classroom set up before your demo because you will have 3 days after to schedule and complete your certification course. Here is my equipment list.
For your demo they are looking for a professional classroom (lighting, educational background, and placement (Make sure you are a good distance from the camera so that you are completely seen- no cut off heads). You need a webcam and headphones (You can use earbuds with a built in microphone until you are able to get a headset) in the classroom. Be sure to use Firefox or Chrome as your web browser and update your Flashplayer before. Once you schedule you can practice in the "practice room" and you can hop into your interview 30 minutes early to make sure the sound, video and powerpoint are ready to go (It records everything so no curse words while practicing)! hahaha!
This was updated in June of 2019. You can do the Live version or the Recorded!
The recorded version is easy to schedule, but if you prefer to have someone on the other end responding then you can do the live version. They also give you immediate feedback and can answer some questions. They are both scored the same, so it is just personal preference. The interviewer is in a busy office in Beijing, so keep in mind that there can be background noise on their end.
1- Speak slow and have the student repeat EVERYTHING you say. This will keep you from using incidental language, which many of our experienced teachers do because they usually work with English speakers.
2- Be sure to have props and to speak with your hands and facial expressions as well. You want the student to mimic the actions you do by pointing to them and having them try! Your non-verbal communication is huge! TPR (Total Physical Response).
3- For your instruction only model. Never just say words. You will do one for the student (they are repeating every word and sentence you say here) and then they can do the next with your help and then on their own. I do, we do & you do.
