For this level there is less "I say, you repeat" and the student can read. They have 2 years of English experience and you want to create a comfortable environment that is conversation focused with a lot of student output. .
1) New Content Instruction: I read the red word first (vocab) and have the student repeat. I then say, "Can you read?" and have them read the sentence. You can just draw an arrow and cup your ear if you want.
2) Positive Correction: Any words that are missed I say at the end while circling them and have the student repeat. We then read that word in context again (I read and then you read).
3) Pacing: For your Level 4 you want to be quick on the slides because there is more content to cover. Once the topic is covered and you go over the definition you need to move on.
4) Props/TPR: When going over the definitions be sure have a picture of the words you are saying or planned TPR such as "country" and showing a picture of China or "government" pretending to have a mallet and hitting with it.
5) Create a Conversation: Look for opportunities to ask extension/connection questions with the flow of the class to create a conversation. You can also ask questions such as, "What does the flag look like?" "I'm American. What nationality are you?" They have already learned these!
My Country, My Culture (old 15 minute version)
LEVEL 5:
For the lesson on "Pollution" you want to categorize the lesson into 6 parts. Introduction, Vocab, Reading & Comprehension, Grammar, Phonics and Review. Your goal is to complete each section. Go through each one teaching in and of itself to practice the pacing.
1- Introduction: Create a comfortable environment. Introduce yourself and then ask the student their name and what they did that day. You can ask what they already know about “Pollution.” etc. Make a conversation and build rapport
2- Vocab:
Read the red words first. Have the student repeat. Break into syllables.
Have the student read the context.
Ask questions about the pictures that give meaning to the words.
Have props such as a trash bin and trash, fish that are in their environment (You can use a picture), vocabulary words with the definitions written on them.
You don't want to spend more than a minute on too many slides so select where you will ask more extension questions. You want to create a conversation with many connections. Avoid being so worried about your pacing that you skip the other strategies such as TPR, visuals and connecting new info. to what they already know.
3- Reading & Comprehension:
Student can do the reading and if it is taking too long it is ok to read some of it and then have them read.
You will go back over the words they missed. You may want to pre-teach the bigger words that they may struggle with like "dangerous." You also want the student to reread any missed words. I like to circle them as they are reading and then go back over them at the end.
Watch your pacing - Stick to the lesson objectives when running behind and add extensions when ahead of time..
4- Grammar:
Have a "cheat sheet"
to be= I am, you are, he/she/it is, they are, we are
Use it when teaching the student future tense for "is going to."
Also have a whiteboard or page that states
Past= -ed (harmed)
Present= Root word (harm)
Future= is going to (harm)
Be sure to help the student with this page because they will most likely struggle.
5- Phonics: Simple instruction going over y making the ee sound. You state the fact and have the student repeat. If there is extra time after they read the words then they can come up with some of their own.
These slides don't take as much time as the grammar.
6- Review: Create a conversation and reiterate the parts that the student struggled with or extend if they got it all.
Be sure to use the extension questions in the teacher directions at the bottom to create conversation. Don't forget to give high fives, fist bumps and really have fun! Learn something new about the student and share some things about you!
