Anne Beecham - 9/16/2024 - Stem Cell Technology Today
Note: We try to provide the group with presentations that span a variety of science and technology related topics. Some to inform and some to stimulate discussion.
The first 26 slides in this presentation illustrate many facts about stem cells and their function. The remaining slides describe a new technology and new product. It is up to the reader to determine if the various referenced clinical studies prove the effectiveness of the product. We do not endorse any commercial products.
The following statement is taken directly from the product advertising materials: “Disclaimer: Our patches are based on the theory of phototherapy. The patches are not proven based on conventional medicine standards and should not be used in place of medical care.

Michael Pinsky - 9/18/23 - Lithium Extraction and Refining
Electric vehicle producers and financial gurus are predicting the demand for lithium by 2030 will
be many times that of present worldwide capacity for battery-grade lithium carbonate and hydroxide. This presentation will describe where lithium is produced and the chemical processing in place. Most lithium production employs either solar evaporation of geological
brines or roasting spodumene ore and each uses vast amounts of water, generally in remote areas, where water is scarce and used by indigenous people. We will see how new process technologies incorporating direct lithium extraction are less costly, more flexible in meeting market demands, and use far less valuable water than the traditional methods.
Jason Bates - 8/7/23 - Making an Emergency Ventilator for the Covid Crisis
The covid pandemic highlighted the lack of mechanical ventilators for the potentially huge number of people who could be at risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This led to a large number of spontaneous efforts around the world to design cheap emergency ventilators. This talk will describe one such effort that took place at the University of Vermont, focusing not only on the device itself but also on the medical complexities of ventilating people with ARDS.
