I created this unique image specifically for this course. It represents the pattern blocks that learners will use to explore properties of operations during this course. I wanted to show some of the blocks overlaid on top of the regular hexagon, which represents 1 whole. Then I wanted to show the other blocks as "ready to use." This serves as a reminder of the learning that participants will receive in the first module. I created all of this image in PowerPoint to help me get the dimensions and colors exactly the way I wanted them to. PowerPoint also uses vector images for shapes which allowed me to scale each shape to the exact dimensions I wanted. I then saved the image as a PNG to preserve sharpness and transparency.
I have chosen to put this image as the logo in my digital portfolio, but also as the logo for the course's Participant Handout document. My company frequently provides a PDF version of a participant handout for asynchronous courses. This document can either be downloaded onto a computer desktop (recommended) or printed. While this can be more difficult for learners using cellular devices or tablets, the participant handout has been positively received by our users in the analytic data we have collected on past courses. The participant handout will eventually meet all learning objectives as it is further developed. At this time, I cannot yet develop this document further until I develop learning activities and determine what conten should go in thie document to supplement and deepen learning.
In thinking about digital design standards, I wanted to keep the document clean, with black text in an easy to read font. I wanted the pattern block images to stand out and be easy to see while not distracting from the content on the page. I tried to keep it as clutter free as possible.
On my digital portfolio logo, I have already embedded the alt text to say: A regular hexagon with an isosceles trapezoid and a rhombus overlaid on top. To the right is a right triangle, a right trapezoid, and an equilateral triangle. For consistency, I will use this same alt text whenever this logo appears in the participant handout or in other parts of the course.
