Andromeda Zaccarian got her start from her father in every sense possible. Conceived as a result of his father paying someone to marry him and give him an heir, Alexei pushed his daughter from a young age to follow in his footsteps and be wildly successful. Andromeda showed exceptional promise in the areas of science, as well as many concerning tendencies when it came to her treatment of the family pets. Nevertheless, Alexei paid to give her the highest quality education. Andromeda graduated from university with several doctorate’s degrees in the field of human biology, genealogy, virology, and advanced zoology. When it came time to find work, her father pulled some strings at a corporation he made some very sizable investments in: Umbrella.
Andromeda’s first few years at Umbrella were spent as an intern monitoring the preliminary data and prototypes for the T-virus and the Tyrant program. After making several connections, she was promoted to working directly in both projects. After helping jumpstart the third line of Tyrants, Andromeda was offered the golden opportunity to begin a project of her own for the company. Having been indoctrinated into Umbrella’s borderline eugenics perspective on human evolution, Andromeda sought to advance humanity not by improving on its own template but by drawing from the templates of other living creatures. Andromeda sought to rewrite the human genome and splice the genetics of people with animals in order to create more adaptable, powerful, and superior organisms. The basis of her project began with rewriting the T-Virus code to cause no phentoyoical changes but rather, it would open the subject’s genetic code up to being altered by certain DNA plasmids. Andromeda named this new strain the Zoonautic Virus, or Z-Virus.
The beginning stages of Andromeda’s research showed promise. However, she found herself falling short with animal subjects and adult humans. So, like many of Umbrella’s other projects, she turned to the local Raccoon City orphanage backed by Umbrella to source her subjects. She found that children were the ideal test subjects. Because their bodies were still growing anyway, they were typically the most susceptible to Z-Virus exposure and had a far greater chance of surviving plasmid mutation. All in all, her study featured 312 children in total. Of them, only 114 survived the initial Z-Virus exposure due to compromised immune systems. Plasmid exposure tests dwindled that number down to 6. Yet, these 6 in particular showed particular promise. Zaccarian pushed them to the limit in terms of training, rounds of exposure to plasmids, and eventually she determined them to be prepared for a field test. Those determined to be failures would be euthanized.
Unfortunately, the day she was scheduled to field test them the outbreak occurred within Raccoon City. Andromeda was forced to evacuate both for her own safety and so that the observers for the Tyrant program could do their job and erase Umbrella’s records. Her mutants would have been left behind but one of Zaccarian’s assistant researchers who had been at odds with her ethics from early in the program took the opportunity to take the six mutant children and escape the city with them. Zaccarian learned of this two decades laters, after already having restarted the program at a new facility before ultimately becoming independent with her project after the collapse of Umbrella. She’s continued to have many successful mutants created at the cost of hundreds of lives. But she is hellbent on getting her promising six back above all.
Andromeda Zaccarian is the definition of “the ends justify the means.” Cold, calculating, ambitious, and manipulative, Andromeda recognizes her own genius and abilities and will not hesitate to use them to further her own goals. She’s also acutely aware of the web of connections she has and is unafraid to utilize nepotism and debts to work the odds of success to her favor. A master manipulator, Zaccarian knows how to size up her targets and mold herself just to their taste in order to gain information or form alliances. She’s not even above feigning romantic interest in order to gain an advantage over others. Zaccarian’s only true interest is in getting results that will benefit her and her research.
Ultimately, Zaccarian’s drive for success and power comes from a lack of proper socialization as a child and the influence of her father. She recalls vividly that her father was a brutal, stern man who often withheld affection and only allowed Andromeda to feel satisfaction from her accomplishments. She came to rely on success to satisfy her desperate need for validation, as even when she accomplished tasks her father’s praise and recognition was minimal. Andromeda denies it, but she feels quite isolated and dejected. She doesn’t know how to change her behavior or her feelings towards herself. Even if she did, it’s likely she wouldn’t want to. She has her father’s values of strength and progress over all.
