Sister Miriam Bell was originally a nun that worked for an orphanage in the forties. She was known to have been highly recommended from Hartford and her arrival signifies the completion of the church’s staffing. She was excellent at cleaning, was exceptionally cheerful, and the children absolutely adored her presence. After some unfortunate happenings at the church involving the disappearances of four children, Sister Bell also went missing. During this time, she was sacrificed by a cult while trying to protect the stolen children and used as a vessel for a demon of unknown name and origin, known otherwise as the Spindly Lady by locals. The demon used her body as a disguise, masquerading as her, and was set to be released and cause chaos upon the land but was sealed within a tomb in the church’s basement. It laid dormant for years before being released by a foolish priest embarking on a journey through the church to see what had happened there previously. Awakened by this, Miriam fled deep into the chasms of the basement through hell itself and ended up coming out of another ritualistic circle in the sewers. She met Roger, a younger demon that quickly grew attached to her as a result of being the spawn of a botched sacrifice of a child.
Having to serve no greater purpose, Miriam guards the church as the Spindly Lady and lurks in the dark depths of the basement, moving between the chasms of Hell and the sewer system and helping bring forth demons traveling from hell into earth. Despite her associations and the ritual which brought about her being, some of the vessel’s instincts remain fixed in her new demon form. She is notorious for attack people who she witnesses trying to target children, described as a nun covered in blood the drags her victims’ remains into the darkest depths of the sewers. Roger often refers to her as Mother, and she willingly adopts this title. She makes sure to fetch him food and drink and watches him as he “plays” in the sewers. She will stand still as he jumps around her and smile at the ceiling, and visits him often to make sure he is well. For the most part, she is an elusive demon that few have ever seen and even fewer wish to ever encounter.
Miriam Bell’s personality has many distinctive quirks that set her apart from other demons. While mostly passive, Miriam Bell tends to disregard the activities of humans unless she is genuinely intrigued by them. Much like Roger, she is fascinated by the activities humans performs, even if it is limited to those living in the sewers she often patrols. Unlike Roger, this is not out of sheer curiosity— it is also driven by the part of her that is still human and seeking to find others to help and to guide, but is ultimately undermined by the demon possessing her and using her body as a vessel. Miriam’s attention is best left unattracted. It is unclear exactly what can provoke her to become agitated but the results of such provocation can be horrifying. Many have learned to turn a blind eye to her as she passes by in fear of invoking her wrath. One thing that has been noted is that Miriam is easily angered by acts or suggestions that involve the harm of a child and more than a few unlucky dwellers have met their end after being dragged into the darkness by Miriam after the mere mention of such topics.
Alternatively, her portion of the sewers has been infamous for being the home to runaways and child prostitutes, and as such, Miriam has come into contact with such individuals on more than one occasion. Her overwhelming maternal instinct from being a nun dominates all else in these instances and Miriam will often produce food and drink for the children and offer some of her robes if she can’t find blankets to keep them warm at night or start bonfires in trash cans to help them stave off the cold. She speaks very little to adults, but some have heard her regarding the children as “her little ones”, telling them stories long into the night, or offering to play with them. She also tends to clean the areas where she knows children will reside. She has committed these children to memory and if she finds any are missing, she will go off and look for them to try and bring them back alive. Most commonly, Miriam wanders between the abandoned church and the sewers to visit Roger, who refers to Miriam as Mother. Miriam is seemingly pleased by his and allows Roger to jump around her and investigate her during each visit. Her presence visibly excites and elates him, and she often brings him food and drink and will travel out of the sewers with him on very rare occasion.
Miriam Bell does not speak and mostly ignores people. On occasion, she may stop and observe actions, take things of interest to her, and try to mimic human behavior out of her demon’s curiosity and her vessel’s reminiscent desires to relive bygone joys. Even with her limited speech, Miriam Bell is able to emanate a deceptively warm aura and look incredibly friendly and cheerful in public areas where there are more people than she would like in order to blend in. On rare occasion, she may kill the lost and lonely soul wandering too close to her but other than that, she is certainly one of the more tame demons. Despite the facade the demon uses through the vessel, it is easy to see through its act in the presence of holy figures, as Miriam actively avoids religious symbols and immediately becomes aggressive towards priests upon encountering them.

Miriam Bell has a variety of abilities she can use to her advantage, including three major forms. Her first form, the Spindly Lady, resembles a skinny, corpse-like body that his capable of moving with unnerving speed and flexibility over a long distance in a short amount of time, but cannot do much damage. It wraps itself around people and squeeze to prevent them from moving and mostly serves to lure people into the basement to seal them in and prevent their escape from the church. The second form is the nun form she often takes on to appear unsuspecting. This form is capable of distorting its face by unhinging its jaw and its fingers can sharpen into sharp claw-like appendages. This form is capable of lunging at terrifying speeds towards targets, teleporting, and floating at will. Her third form is the UNSPEAKABLE-esque unnamed form. Its body is painted red and it has a single eye with many arms and tendrils which protrude from it. The full depths of this form are unknown, but simply looking at it for two long is capable of driving people mad.
Sister Bell is able to call upon other demons and cultists to help her at any time and they will willingly come and abide her command, whether its to help her escape or distract a target, or destroy them because she has said they should.
Miriam is not guaranteed to be friendly and is easily provoked unless the subject of her interest is a child.
Miriam is not verbally communicative (aside from screaming) but may find other ways to communicate.
Miriam is repelled by religious symbols.
Miriam prefers to attack in the dark but can still do so under other circumstances. Her only real requirement is that her target be isolated.
If you hurt Roger, Miriam will know and she will come to defend him.
