Content warning for mentions of war, torture, and death.
Alma was the child of a doomed love between a mortal man and demigoddess. Alma’s mother, Sabrine, was sent by her father and the god of the sea, Triytn, to aid the merfolk during the Mythic War. She offered the merpeople protection in secret pockets of the ocean and tried to help act as a spy for the merfolk in order to warn them of incoming dangers ahead of time. To do this, she took on the form of a mortal woman and would venture into towns and cities, mingling with humans and gaining insight as to their plans in the war. During her escapades, she met and fell in love with a man named Alastor, and the two had Alma. For a short time, life seemed perfect and peaceful despite the conflict. However, just three years after her birth, it would all fall apart. The war grew more tumultuous and hostile, eventually spreading to the quiet town where they’d been trying to hide out. A mob of human soldiers had stormed into their home in the night, dragging the family out and revealing to all the identity of “Danae.” They revealed that she was the demigoddess Sabrine, the daughter of the Mythic God Trityn. Alastor was shocked, as Sabrine had kept this a secret and been living a double life thinking it would help keep him safe. Believing he had been deceived, the human soldiers let him go. Sabrine however, was tortured and executed publicly before town. With the last of her powers, she cast Alastor’s final memories of her and their family out of his mind so that he would not remember the horror of how it ended - only the joy of how it used to be. As for Alma, the town mistook her as just a normal bastard child of a human and a Mythic. They cast her to the cold ocean, hoping she would drown amidst the waves.
Fortunately, the water did not kill Alma. It’s argued whether her survival was a result of her Mythic blood or if her grandfather saved her to honor his lost daughter. Whatever the case, she was transformed into a mermaid and was carried off by the current to the sea, where she was found by the other merfolk that her mother had been helping. Realizing she was alone, the merfolk quickly recognized what had happened and mourned the loss of their savior. In her honor, they raised and nurtured young Alma. As she grew older, the war orphan realized her history and found out the truth about how Mythic-kind was locked in a terrible war that had taken her family from her, and she vowed to help her people just as her mother had. She realized her powers and her status as a Guardian at her coming of age ceremony and promised to use her magic to help, to heal, and to protect. She became a skilled combat medic and frontline messenger in the Mythic War, navigating the waters of the world to deliver important packages, parcels, warnings, signals, and notices between commanders and posts. She was also dispatched to help aid the wounded and defend those on the retreat, as well as act as a shield for those on the attack, As she grew more familiar with territories and people, she helped in distraction operations and even engaged in direct defensive measures, saving thousands during such conflicts as Operation Pure Waters and the Great Smoke Out. She was regarded highly by many Mythics as a savior and defender, and even revered in some circles as a blessing sent by the gods themselves to save the world’s fading fantastical creatures.
After the war came to an end, Alma spent several years acting as an apprentice to Amalgamate, a famous witch and veteran of the war. She honed many of her magic abilities and guardian powers while in Amalgamate’s company. She also learned much about potion making and spellcraft, both of which she hoped to utilize to continue helping the displaced Mythics of her community. During this time, she attended schooling to become a nurse, hoping to put the skills she’d learned during the war as a combat medic to better use. After graduating, she spent a year traveling with Amalgamate’s friend, Agnes. The unicorn taught her how to use her abilities to heal the world from the damage done by the war, effectively solidifying the last of her magic abilities with real world experience. After a time, she returned to the pagecorner town she’d initially lived in with Amalgamate. With some assistance from both the witch, the unicorn, and a lot of time and hard work, Alma ended up founding her own small business. Heart of the Sea is a quaint little center that combines Alma’s two greatest strengths based on experiences: medicine and movement or good. The main center employs Mythics of all kinds to help sort, ship, and deliver packages with incredible speed and service. The side building operates as a walk-in and urgent care clinic where Alma herself and a handful of experienced doctors and other personnel see patients from the local community for consultations, minor operations, treatments, and more, all without charging them a dime. Alma manages and oversees both operations herself and even helps with personal treatments and local deliveries herself. She is considered a major pillar of the community by many, devoting much of her time to helping whoever she can and much of her money to building up the pagecorner for everyone who lives in it.
These days, Alma tries to enjoy the relative peace that has followed the war now that the worst of things is presumably behind her. She spends much of her time serving the Mythics of her community, managing her businesses, and looking into new hobbies. Yet something still nags at her, and that something is not knowing the fate of her father.
Around other Mythics, Alma is confident and warmly welcomed. She is a well-known and well-respected legend among Mythics, and she approaches her community with joy and optimism in abundance. She proudly displays her abilities for the entertainment of children and often hosts community entertainment events, gladly singing for the crowds that accumulate from far and wide just to hear her legendary voice. Where her people are concerned, she has no trouble approaching them to help, to give, and to support. It’s a different story where humans are involved. Humans have long garnered Alma’s fear. She often tries to avoid human settlements and human beings out of anxiety, recalling what they did to her mother and the lengths they were willing to go to destroy her in the Mythic War. Years later, Alma understands that times have changed and humans are no longer as cruel and malicious as they were during he conflict. Logically, she knows that they are not all bad, and most would not wish her any harm. However, Alma’ limited interactions with them outside of the war and her history with human beings makes her very wary and very afraid of them. Amidst humans, she displays the characteristic shyness and aversive nature of most merfolk.
Naturally though, Alma is a very soulful and playful person. She’s extraordinarily kind and forgiving, she loves interacting with her friends and she tends to present herself as more outgoing and affectionate. She’s a very loyal companion and she does her best to inspire and motivate others around her. Alma is an optimist, choosing to see the good in everyone and everything, and she looks for solutions to problems rather than excuses. She proves to be quite flexible in dire situations, albeit a bit panicky at times. More than anything though, she is resilient. She refuses to surrender to a world and a life that has given her so many curveballs. She is capable of turning a bad situation into a good one and her smile can light up a room. She is beloved by many, with the few that reserve hatred for her doing so for more prejudiced reasons rather than harboring any resentment for her character. Her indomitable spirit and determination are part of what makes her such a good Guardian.
Alma does have her down days, and when she does, she tends to sit in water and reflect on her life leading to that point. She has a very bad habit of doubting herself and her abilities at the worst of her times, letting her anxiety overwhelm her. Other's perceptions matter little to her, but her perception of herself is sometimes called into question. Her sense of empathy often causes her to forget to take time for herself. She has a habit of overexerting and overextending herself. Though she presents herself as brave and courageous, Alma is not without her fears and worries. Fear has ruled her life for the longest time, though she is quite excellent at hiding it.
