[08:37] Siri Vezina: Art and music are the first subjects many school systems cut when they get strapped for cash.

[08:37] Siri Vezina: My parents were both music teachers in public school.

[08:38] OptoMystic (scottmerrick.oh): My favorite colleague at school is our art teacher. I miss him. Get to do a faculty meeting with video right after this.

[08:39] Siri Vezina: The college I retired from got rid of their music and musical theater majors just before I retired - they kept just 2 faculty members, for the pep/concert bands and the chorus.

[08:39] OptoMystic (scottmerrick.oh): At least they kept the chorus. That kept my daughter sane through high school.

[08:39] Siri Vezina: It helps :D

[08:40] OptoMystic (scottmerrick.oh): She had a very good part-time job in college appearing and singing as a Disney princess (all of them) at parties for children

[08:43] Siri Vezina: This is the training some of our US politicians would have benefited from.

[08:43] OptoMystic (scottmerrick.oh): Are we ready to admit that school as we knew it is no longer a valid option? I would have rather seen my children in a program El Sistemo than being prisoners 7 hours a day for crimes they never committed.

[08:43] Siri Vezina: My experience wasn't that bad. I had good friends, good teachers, good subjects.

[08:44] Siri Vezina: But some kids don't do well with sitting for such long periods. Boys, especially.

[08:44] OliveTree Lighthouse: yes me too . I loved school and I was very curious .but

[08:44] OptoMystic (scottmerrick.oh): Once the child discovers he is important to his family, he begins to work for ways to improve himself...(him/her)

[08:45] OliveTree Lighthouse: I have to say I also hated the bad teachers and the theoretical way they taught

[08:45] Siri Vezina: I bet that informed your own teaching, Olive.

[08:46] Siri Vezina: I can only remember one teacher who I thought did a bad job, and that was more what he was assigned to - a "hands'0n" physics class with 25 kids in the class and no lab facility.

[08:46] OliveTree Lighthouse: yes but also having great colleagues that allowed me to watch them , experiment with them and learn from them
