Sudarshana Homa

The word Sudarshana is derived from Sanskrit words Su {meaning “good/auspicious”} and Darshana {meaning “vision”}. Hence, the word Sudarshana means “vision of which is auspicious and good”. The other word chakra is also derived Sanskrit words Chruhu {meaning “movement”} and kruhu {meaning “to do”}. Hence, the word chakra means the one which is mobile and can be in motion easily. Sudarshana Chakra is the ultimate weapon and is said to ward off negative powers or vibrations.

The Sudarshana Chakra is one of the greatest weapons in Hindu mythology. It is the chief weapon of Lord Vishnu. The Sudarshana Chakra is a spinning disk-like weapon with 108 serrated edges. It is depicted in the right rear hand of the Lord Vishnu. Sudarshana Chakra is depicted as an ayudhapurusha and fierce aspect of his owner Vishnu. According to the Puranas and Vedas, Sudarshana Chakra is used by Lord Vishnu as the ultimate weapon of destruction.

Sudarshan Chakra is also mentioned in the great war of Mahabharata. Jayadratha was responsible for the death of Arjuna's son. So Arjuna vows to kill Jayadrath the very next day before sunset or set himself on fire. However Drona creates a combination of 3 layers of troops, which acts as a protective shield around Jayadratha. So Krishna creates an artificial sunset by using his Sudarshana Chakra. By seeing this Jayadratha comes out of the defense to celebrate Arjuna's defeat. Instantly at that split second, Krishna withdrew his Chakra to expose the sun. Krishna then orders Arjuna to kill him. Arjuna follows his orders and kills Jayadrath, by beheading him.
