Agni Theertha in Rameswaram

The eastern sea shore opposite to the Ramanathaswamy temple is named as Agni Theertha . This is one of the sacred baths in Rameswaram (theerthas), Holistic rituals such as prohithams, yagnam( yaham), tharpanam(ritual for the ancestors who were dead) has been performed in the shores of Agni theertha.

It is believed that, taking bath in this sea will vanish ones sins and make them pure again. And mixing the ashes of the dead person in this sea (Agni theertha) will bring peace to the soul of the dead . Pilgrims who plan for sacred bath in theerthas should first take bath in Agni theertha, followed by the bath in theerthas inside the temple.

Rameswaram has 22 theerthas in the form of wells in various parts of the temple. Taking bath in all these theerthas purify the body as well as the mind. It is believed that this water is holy and also has got medicinal qualities. Pilgrims end their pilgrimage of Rameshwaram after taking bath at the Kodi theertha.
