4. What a test!

A poor young artist was asked to paint the portrait of a rich lady and he did his best to make a good picture. When the portrait was finished it was shown to lady’s friends. Some of them thought it was too realistic. They were afraid the lady would not like the picture. But the painter felt that he had been successful. He didn’t want to change anything. Then one of his friends suggested the following: “We’ll leave it to the lady’s dog to decide if the picture is good or bad.” The next day the picture was sent to the lady’s house. The friends gathered to see the result of the test. As soon as the dog was brought before the portrait it began to lick it all over. Everybody congratulated the painter. Nobody knew that the painter had spread some bacon all over the picture!

A dramatic FA Cup final

It had been the most successful season in Everton's history. The club had won both the Football League Championship and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Now they had come to Wembley hoping to win the FA Cup final against Manchester United. A victory would make them the first English team ever to win the three trophies in one season.

Both teams began the game cautiously. There was a minor alarm at Everton's end after four minutes and a major one seven minutes later at United’s. That was when a long throw-in from Stevens flew deep into the United penalty area and had goalkeeper Bailey stretching desperately to punch the ball clear. It dropped to Everton's Peter Reid, who volleyed back immediately and would surely have scored if Gidman had not diverted the ball against the foot of the post and out for a corner.

A more calculated threat came from United in the twentieth minute when Whiteside. Olsen and Albiston combined to send Hughes charging through in the inside-left position. Hughes was in an excellent posi¬tion to shoot - even score -, but he hesitated, thus allowing the tireless Reid to steal the ball from him.

The drama that was to come late in the second half could hardly be foreseen when the interval came quietly, with the taking of Robson's name for a foul on Reid as the only notable occurrence of the minutes immediately before it.

In the fiftieth minute United opened the Everton defence with a delightful move. Stapleton crossed from the right so that Hughes was able to head the ball down into the path of Robson, but the United captain’s left-foot shot was inches too high. United came even closer to scoring when Hughes sent Whiteside through after 63 minutes, but goalkeeper Southall, the new Foot-baller of the Year, advanced to block the shot expertly.

Twelve minutes from the end of regular time came the sensational moment when Moran was sent off by referee Peter Willis for a foul on Reid that had sent the Everton player flying through the air. Moran, a likeable Irishman, thus became the first player ever to be sent off in a Wembley Cup final The referee’s decision to send Moran off “for a rather ordinary foul”, much criticized after the match, made the Manchester players furious. To everyone's surprise they immediately played like twelve men instead of ten. At the end of regular time the score was still 0-0 (nil-nil), but nine minutes from the end of extra time it was United's Norman Whiteside who steered a beautiful left- foot shot past the Everton goalkeeper for the winning goal that destroyed Everton's Kewin Moran being sent off by referee dream of taking three titles in one season. “United would probably not have won if one of their players hadn't been sent off," was an opinion often heard after the match. The referee's controversial decision had turned a boring game into one of the most dramatic finals in the FA Cup's long history.

MY FAVOURITE WRITER

Agatha Christie is known all over the world as the Queen of Crime. She wrote 78 crime novels, 19 plays and 6 romantic novels under the name of Mary Westmacott. Her books have been translated into 103 foreign languages.

She is the third best-selling author in the world (after Shakespeare and the Bible). Many of her novels and short stories have been filmed. The Mousetrap, her most famous play, is now the longest-running play in history.

Agatha Christie was born at Torquay, Devonshire. She was educated at home and took singing lessons in Paris. She began writing at the end of the First World War. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was published in 1920. That was the first appearance of Hercule Poirot, who became one of the most popular private detectives since Sherlock Holmes. This little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and the passion for order amazes everyone by his powerful intellect and his brilliant solutions to the most complicated crimes.

Agatha Christie became generally recognised in 1926, after the publishing of her novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It's still considered her masterpiece. When Agatha Cristie got tired of Hercule Poirot she invented Miss Marple, a deceptively mild old lady with her own method of investigation.

Her last Poirot book, Curtain, appeared shortly before her death, and her last Miss Marple story, Sleeping Murder, and her autobiography were published after her death.

Agatha Christie's success with millions of readers lies in her ability to combine clever plots with excellent character drawing, and a keen sense of humour with great powers of observation. Her plots always mislead the reader and keep him in suspense. He cannot guess who the criminal is. Fortunately, evil is always conquered in her novels.

LIBRARY

Library is one of my favourite places. It’s a place where you can find lots of books on various subjects, magazines and sometimes old newspapers. If a library is well-stocked, it’s an asset to every school, college or university. Our school also has a library, but it’s not large. When I have free time, I often visit it and look for interesting books to read. All books are kept and arranged properly, so it’s not difficult to find what you need. Besides, the librarians are always there to help you. There are also some libraries in my neighbourhood. My favourite place is the library of Italian literature. I’m fond of Italian and I’ve been learning this language for several years. I know that attending this library is a good way to master my language skills. Apart from books in Italian, one can find other international literature in different languages, for example, in French or in English. The rooms of this library are light, spacious and well-equipped. Nowadays, there is also a possibility to read books in electronic format. In my opinion, it’s one of the best and most interesting libraries in our area. Whenever I come here, there are different exhibitions of books, pictures, photos. Sometimes, there are also lessons for the little ones, where they can hear a fairy-tale, draw a dragon or make a castle. I think that libraries are very important for people of any age. First of all, it’s the great means of education. Secondly, we can get lots of useful information there. And, finally, it just feels good to spend time in a place where nobody disturbs you when you’re reading.

MY FAVOURITE BOOK

My name is Alexander. I’m twelve years old. I’m fond of reading. Most of all I like adventure novels. My favourite book is “The Mysterious Island” by Jules Verne. You can find much necessary, useful and valuable information in the book. This novel proved us that human can survive in any conditions. Each character is interesting. Cyrus Smith was well-informed. His mind, purposefulness and patience helped colonists to survive. Thank to their persistence they achieved prosperity on a desert island. They could grow rich harvest of wheat from the only seed, build a mill, increase poultry, handle a monkey and build a boat. After the example of Ayrton we see that any criminal can reform. In the novel Jules Verne wanted to prove that people are strong if they are united.
