Trait guide

HYENAS share the VOK trait guide. The ONLY Difference in terms of traits is that hyenas do not have lion manes. A hyena with a mane outside the 'normal back fur ruff' is just considered a fur or backmane edit.

Welcome to the trait guide for Valley of Kings!

There are five main types of traits in Valley of Kings. Nonrarity (arbitrary) edits, Minor (Small) edits, Medium (Mid-size) edits, Large (Significant changes) edits, and Restricted (Typically un-obtainable) edits.

There are some traits that are listed as limited. Limited traits are special event traits. These are traits that are typically a higher rarity, but are offered special/in special variations for event purposes only as a lower rarity. This means: You can obtain a large edit for the price of a medium edit, and it will pass at the medium edit frequency in breeding. These edits can still be added outside of the event edit, HOWEVER, they will have to be at the higher (original) Rarity

Edit changes to a lion must be approved by a staff member to become official unless noted otherwise

If you are unsure where an edit falls, please feel free to ask!

Edit Distribution/ Extra Information

Regular adopts may have Minor traits (Spread out)
50’s may have medium traits
100’s may have large traits
Restricted traits are reserved for events/special occasions

Founders may only have scars, no accessories or edits. Founders must use the basic mane, with no other fur edits (if mane applicable)

Only special adopts (50s,100s, and event adopts) can be custom lined. Custom lined should be limited because a universal lineset(s) make edits more easy to decipher.

Breeding Rolls and Chance percentages

Adults should be finished before the time for growth (3 weeks) since the user can request a growth whenever, it’s recommended to do adult versions first, since they are larger, then make a simplified cub of them.

There is a chance between 1-4 cubs in a litter.

If one user is breeding, its 25% of 1, 50% chance of 2, 15% chance of 3, and 10% chance of 4.

If TWO users are breeding, its 75% chance of 2, 15% chance of 3, and 10% chance of 4.

With fertility potion, 90% chance of 3, 10% chance of 4.

Mane is a 50/50 chance, whether or not the parents have a mane do NOT affect this, except in special rolls. Cubs dont grow mane until they’re an adult. (So it does not need to be drawn on the cub.) Mane style is artist choice

Minor edits have a 30% chance of passing if 1 parent has it, and a 60% chance of passing if both parents have it

Medium edits have a 15% chance of passing with 1 parent, 30% with 2

Special edits (like the tiger) have a 5% chance of passing no matter how many parents have it

Mutations:

Mutation chance (if allowed for the breeding) is 15%, (so 15/100) , mutations mean the baby will have an edit the parents do not have

1-64 = common/small mutation (hair tufts...teeth...tail tuft edits...ear tufts...ect)

65-84 = color mutation (can include colors not on the parent, and even unnatural/neon colors if you want; neons/bright colors exclusive to nursery. Can also be design/marking mutations for unnatural markings)

85-94 = Medium mutation (fulbody fur, mane, significant ear shape changes)

95-100 = Large mutations (siamese twins(restricted breeding only), wings, elemental/magic, multi headed, extra eyes, cyclops, extra limbs ect)

Breeding Items

Food coloring adds a random color to the palette generated here; you can use as many as you like

Edit magnifier doubles chance of present edits passing.

10% for large, 30% for medium, 60% for minor

60% for medium with both parents, 100% chance for minor on both parents.

Edit magnifiers can NOT be stacked

Mutation booster doubles chance of mutations.

30% initial mutation chance, 1-49= minor mutation, 50-59 = color/marking mutation, 60-89= medium mutation, 90-100 = large mutations

Mutation boosters CAN be stacked (up to 2).

Stacked (2) is 45% initial mutation chance, 1-29 = minor mutation,30-39 = color/marking mutation, 40-89 = medium mutation, 90-100= large mutation

Non-Rarity Edits

Non-rarity edits are edits that generally don't change the physical makeup of a lion drastically. These are edits that are NOT rolled for when breeding. They are at the artist's discretion if they want to add them or not.

Non rarity edits include:
-Scars
-Accessories
-Unusual coloration (LIMITED)
-Weight/Build
-Expression
-Disabilities (Blindness,deafness,ect)
-Powers/magic
-Whiskers
-Basic manes
-Size
-Tattoos

Scarring

There is no limit on size of scars (within reasonable boundary- you can’t have a lion with a design made up 70% of scars). Scars can be applied with prompts to either adults or cubs. The design of the lion must still be 'legible' around the scars. Ear nicks, small gouges, slight disfigurement (like a twisted paw, kinked tail, ect) are all plausible with minor scars. Missing/whited eye from scarring is considered a minor scar.

Scarring DOES NOT PASS in breedings (As cubs won't inherit their parents scars, of course.) Artists may still at them add their discretion.

Large Scarring

Large scarring is a bit more limited and at a higher cost. These are more drastic scars that make it harder to make out the design and change more about the lion. These include missing limbs, missing tails, ect.

Scarring DOES NOT PASS in breedings (As cubs won't inherit their parents scars, of course.) Artists may still add them at their discretion.

Accessories

Accessories are entirely free reign to the owner of the lion to add in any artwork/personal refs they like. HOWEVER, accessories placed on the lion's official ref must be added with the according item. This is to encourage development, and discourage having multiple extra refs.
If accessories are added, a ref without them must be available or available upon request in the event an artist needs it for something like nursery batches or a potential future owner of the lion requests it.

Accessory additions do not need to be approved, but be aware you may be asked to change them if they fall outside of the guidelines or are added without the appropriate requirements.
Accessories DO NOT PASS in breedings, but the artists may still add them at their discretion.

Unusual coloration

Unusual/unnatural colors are considered non-rarity, as they are not rolled for traits. Unusual colored parents can have unusual colored offspring without a nursery roll. HOWEVER: They cannot be added normally, as they are limited. They can be added with a medium or above MYO (Or a 50-or 100 adopt). Or may be available through events/special occasions. This includes non-natural colors like blues, greens, purples, neons/ect. They may also be added through breeding items, or random breeding mutations.

Weight/build
A lion's weight or physical build (as depicted in artwork) or on the reference as chubbier/skinnier/bulkier/ect is at the user or artist's desire. It is not considered an edit as long as it doesn't alter the physical proportions/skeleton of the lion itself.

Weight doesn't pass in breedings, but artists may add them at their discretion.

Weight edits do need to be approved (to make sure the design hasn't been altered) But you do not need an item/prompt to add them.

Expression

Expression changes/eye changes/stylistic face changes are considered expression edits and may be added freely to more personalize a lion. Things like flicked back or perked ears are also fine as long as they maintain the original ear shape. Redrawing the eyes to suit your style is acceptable. Very minor muzzle/nose edits (to suit expressions, without changing the physical shape) are acceptable.

Expression edits do not need to be approved, and don't need an item or prompt to add, but be aware you may be asked to change them if they fall outside of the guidelines.

Disabilities

Disabilities such as blindness, deafness, muteness, ect are considered developmental choices, and are not considered edits. Feel free to add/utilize them at your discretion in your writing and art. If you want the physical/visible alteration (like white eyes to make the blindness visible on the reference) you can add this with a scar edit.

Powers/Magic

Powers/magical abilities are considered developmental choices, and are not an edit in writing or personal art. HOWEVER: it is considered an elemental edit *large edit* if you want magical elements directly visible on the official reference (as a constant magical output/formation and rolled for edit). You can give your lions any abilities that you want for writing purposes.

Whiskers

General whiskers (brow whiskers, face whiskers, ect) are not considered edits and are free to add or move around at your desire. Whiskers should be made up of simple lines, but can be any shape, density, or placement on the face you prefer as long as it's within reason. Crooked whiskers are fine.

If the whiskers have an addition beyond a simple line (baubles, feathered ends, ect) they are considered a Minor edit.

Manes/Basic manes

These include the basic manes available on the VOK lineset. The basic mane, the elegant mane, the backmane, ect. These are addable as desired. If you change the mane shape, that is considered an edit.

Manes are rolled at a 50/50 for breedings.

Size
Your lions can be any size you write them at. Their height doesn't matter as long as they have normal proportions.

Tattoos

Tattoos can be added to your lion/hyena at will, but a ref must be able to be provided without them. Like scarring, they cannot pass in breeding and cannot cover an expansive amount of the body.

Minor Edits

Minor edits are edits that physically change a lion in very small ways. These are rolled edits, and must have an item and permission to be added.

Minor edits have a 30% chance of passing if 1 parent has it, and a 60% chance of passing if both parents have it

Minor edits include:
-Minor mane shape edits
-
Hair edits/hair tufts on the head
-Small fur shape edits
-Backmane
-Small fangs
-Small ear edits (Tufts, slightly longer, slightly more pointed, floppy, ect)
-Claws
-Whisker ends
-Pupil shape edit
-Tail tuft shape edits
-Slightly shorter/longer (lion) tail

Minor mane edits

These are edits that change the basic manes only slightly. Whether its a small tuft of hair here or there, or slight variation. These shouldn't change the volume or overall shape of the mane, and the original mane should be recognizable to some capacity. If significantly edited to the point of custom lined, it becomes a medium edit.

Hair on the head

Hair on the head of any length is considered a minor edit. This is hair coming from the top of the head or the back of the head (just slightly behind the ears). The growth should be from this area. If the point of growth extends down the neck, it becomes a mane edit.

Small fur shape edits

Small fur edits (Slightly longer, slightly shorter, slight shape change) are considered minor as long as they don't change the lineart dramatically. The rule of thumb is that fur changes for minor should be within this range of distance from the original lines, with some leeway.

Backmane

A custom backmane (outside of the backmane provided in the original base) is considered a minor edit. This can only run along the ridge of the back, and has to be separate from the fur (a separate ridge of fur), otherwise it is just a fur edit.

Small fangs

Small fangs/teeth are considered a minor edit. If fangs extend beyond the bottom of the jaw, they become a medium saber fang edit.

Small ear edits

Small ear edits are edits that don't change the inherent build of the ear. They can be things like ear tufts, slightly altered shape, slightly smaller/slightly bigger, floppy (but roughly same shape) or slightly more pointed. They should not change the entire shape of the ear.

Claws

Claw shape/claw extension OR total claw removal is a minor edit. All lions are considered to have basic claws by default. Giving a lion larger/longer claws, different nail shapes, or removing the claws entirely are considered minor edits.

Whisker ends

Whiskers by themselves are considered nonedits, however- if you want to add something like a bauble or shape to the end of the whiskers or make the shape something other than a single line (like the feathered end of dragon whiskers or more solid whiskers like a catfish) it is considered a minor edit.

Pupil shape edit

Pupil shape edits (on the official ref) are considered minor edits. These are very hard to regulate due to stylistic differences in artwork, and in your own art you can draw lions with whatever pupil shape you desire. This edit only applies to the main ref.

Tail tuft edits

Tail tufts on a NORMAL lion tail are editable for minor edits into any style or length you prefer as long as its done within the range of the tail end.

Slightly shorter/longer tail

A slightly longer or shorter LION tail is considered a minor edit. It should be within this range. Cannot be anything other than a lion tail.

Medium Edits

Medium edits are edits that physically change a lion in significant ways. These are rolled edits, and must have an item and permission to be added.

Medium edits have a 15% chance of passing with 1 parent, 30% with 2

-Saber (long) fangs
-Tail edits (to other shapes)
-Glowing (anything)
-Body Spines

-Full mane edits
-Large fur edits
-Halo

-Horns
-Large ear edits (like editing to an ear of a different species...super big ears, ect)
-Halfblood edits (Limited)
-Muzzle shape edits (as long as they are still lion-ish/feline)
-
Body Alterations (Tall/short)
-Small wings

Saber (long) Fangs
Saber fangs are teeth edits, these are just any tooth edit referring to teeth that extend beyond the jaw line in any direction. These can also include things like tusks.

Tail edits
These are full tail shape/size edits. These tail edits should still be mammalian. This means: Furred, or skinned in some way. They cannot be scaled/feathered/ect without a larger edit. They can be any shape or size as long as they are still a mammalian tail. Though they have to be made of fur, they can mimic other animal tails (Like a furred fish tail). You can also use this to give a lion multiple tails. (Up to 6 tails total)

Glowing

Glows anywhere on the lion are considered medium edits. Eyes, markings, paws, ect. Glow is just a solid glowing area, it doesn't flicker, glimmer, and isn't manipulated, it doesn't have a coherent shape.

Small body spines

Small spikes or spines on the body. Can't interfere with movement. Can be placed anywhere, but are separate from horns(as they are a separate edit, and can be larger/ different shaped)

Full mane edits

Full mane edits are completely redrawn mane/unique mane styles.

Large fur edits

Fur edits that extend beyond the minor fur edit threshhold, full fur edits, extreme fur edits

Halo
A halo of light, showing anywhere around the body. Max of 3. Must be transparent/obviously made of light.

Horns

Horn growth on the face (Up to 8 at a maximum), can be placed anywhere on the head in these general areas. There isn't a size or shape limit, but it should be reasonable for the lion to lift its head. Antlers are acceptable as horn edits.

Large/full ear edits

A medium ear edit can edit the entire shape of the ear. These ear edits should still be mammalian. This means: Furred, or skinned in some way. The inner ear should still align with the original lion base skull structure, and shouldn't be super off kilter/located in different places.

Halfblood edits

***See the halfblood/fullblood edit section

Halfblood edits roll as medium edits, but are limited. They cannot be added on a medium MYO, only a large MYO, due to the nature of their rolls and chance at higher rarities.

Muzzle shape edits

Muzzle shape edits are considered medium. This alters the actual physical shape of the muzzle/skull. This is different from a minor expression edit.

Body Alterations (Tall/short)

Lions may be any height you wish, this edit refers to making legs longer or stockier/shorter. This is related to the proportion of the lion rather than their height.

Small wing edits

Small wings (of any type, angel, bat, bug, butterfly, ect) are considered medium edits. They must be within this size range, and are regarded as incapable of sustaining actual flight. Wings do not have to be on the back, they can be placed anywhere. Including ankles (feet wings), backside (butt wings) head wings, tail wings, ect. A lion may have up to 4 small wings. These CAN be added with large wings.

Large Edits

Large edits are edits that significantly alter a lion's body. These are rolled edits, and must have an item and permission to be added.

Special edits have a 5% chance of passing no matter how many parents have it. This is because they often require a lot of work from the artists in cases like breeding since they have to do both the adult and baby versions.

-Full blood edit
-Large wings
-Cyborg
-Extra limbs
-(minor)Gene splicing
-Multiple heads
- Extra eyes
-Extra ears
-Scales
-Magical elements (fire,ice,thunder,ect)
-Plant growth
-Crystal growth
-Feather growth

Full blood edit
***See the halfblood/fullblood edit section

Large wings
Large wing edits include wings of any type (Bat, angel, insect, ect) and can be any size or shape. There can be up to 6 wings. These can be combined with small wings. Large wings can also include wyvern wings (Wings that replace the front limbs of a lion)

Cyborg

Cyborg refers to lions with robotic attachments or parts. These can be robotic tails/limbs. Robotic eyes/growths/ect. With a cyborg edit, the lion is still mostly biological, and not full robotic.

Extra limbs

Extra legs... pretty self explanatory. Max of 8 in total. Legs must be in general leg areas, no back legs or tail legs or face legs or silly leg positions.

Gene splicing

Gene splicing involves combining a lion with another creature. Gene splice can combine a lion with anything, even if it isn't cat shaped or mammalian. A gene splice is best related to a scientific or magical unrealistic merging of creatures. A gene splice must be on the original base. One individual gene splice can contain two smaller edits (Ect, a horse gene splice can have hooves and a horse tail) Or one larger edit (A merlion, a snake lion, ect). The design must still be recognizable as a lion or having a lion base species. Gene splicing is a single edit, will be rolled once, and passes as a full edit. Cubs can have a similar gene splice to their parents, or have alternate variations (mutated versions)

***For more on gene splicing vs full blood edit see the halfblood/fullblood edit section

Multiple heads

Also includes tail mouths. Allows extra heads on a lion (Up to 4).

Extra eyes/ extra ears

*Large due to the nature of excessive skull shape edits
Up to 6 eyes, up to 6 ears

Scale growth
Growth of scales on the body. Can cover up to 50% of the lion at maximum

Elemental edits

Visible "Magical" attributes on the reference. These are actual elements that are showing on the ref. These can be anything within reason as long as they don't obscure over 50% of the body and there is an element it can be attached to. (Mane made of fire... ice feet... shadow tendrils...wings made of electricity...ect)

Plant growth
Growth of plants on the body. Can cover up to 50% of the lion at maximum

Crystal growth
Growth of crystals on the body. Can cover up to 50% of the lion at maximum

Feather growth
Growth of feathers on the body. Can cover up to 50% of the lion at maximum

Restricted Edits

Restricted edits are edits that are not normally available. These edits are NOT passable, NOT makeable in myos, and generally delegated to events or special occasions.

Restricted edits include (but are not limited to)
-Other species faces/muzzles (like a beak, a human face, a fish mouth/face) Muzzles should still be mammalian.
-Headless
-Extreme gene splicing (To the point they are not lion-recognizable anymore)
-Fully robotic

Half blood and Full blood edits: Explained

What is a halfblood edit?

A halfblood edit is an edit that means your lion is half lion, and half something else. Halfblood edits are done on the original base, and a halfblood edit represents itself in up to THREE ways. Basically, if you have a halfblood, they can have up to three free edits that are considered part of the halfblood!
So a halfblood can have an edited tail, fur, and mane
Or it can be edited ears and body
Or it can be just edited teeth, ect. It can even be near invisible at times! but what's cool about halfbloods isn't their edits- its their rolls.

Halfbloods are medium edits, which means they roll at 15% to pass their halfblood trait. When passed, this will include all of the traits that come with that specific halfblood. (So the plus is if you get lucky, you get three edits in one roll! But if you aren't lucky, the downside is you don't get the extra rolls for each edit). Any halfblood offspring will ALWAYS get the same edits as their halfblood parent.

If breeding two halfbloods, the chance of halfblood passing is 30% (Even if they are different types of halfblood).

Halfbloods also come with a rare, recessive 5% chance of having a full blooded offspring!

What is a fullblood?
A fullblood means your character isn't a lion at all! It means that it's a member of the ARPG that is a fullblood (Anything except lion). A fullblood will always be custom lined (Because they are not lions! so a lion base doesn't really work for them) A fullblood can produce halfblood offspring when paired in breedings.

Full blood has 5% chance of passing no matter how many parents have it. Breeding another breed (tiger x leopard/ leopard x leopard ect) will not guarantee a baby of that species. or a mix of the two. You can still get a lion cub from this breeding. This is to prevent selective breeding/preserve rarity and make it so everyone has equal chance regardless of what parents are present; along with keep the nursery artists from having to do an extreme amount of work for large edits.

Canonically, this is explained as being an influence of the lion god who watches over the Valley of kings.

When breeding a fullblood, it has a 15% chance of passing on the halfblood trait. If you breed 2 fullbloods, its a 30% chance. A fullblood and a halfblood have a 30% chance of passing halfblood.

If a halfblood is born from a full blood parent, it is the artist's choice which edits to include (up to 3) as the manifestation of the halfblood edit.

Full bloods also get extra rolls for edit to pass if halfblood does not.

-Tail at 15%
-Ear edits at 15%
-Body edits at 15% (leaner, more bulky, more muscled, scales, body covering, ect) this is basically an "other at artists choice" section.
-Fur edits at 15%

So if you have a
Fullblood: the roll order is
-Roll once at 5% for a fullblood edit
(if that doesn't pass)
-Roll 15% for a halfblood passing
(if that doesn't pass)
-Roll 15% for tail edit passing
-Roll 15% for ear edit passing
-Roll 15% for body edit passing
-Roll 15% for fur edit passing

Please note

Quarter blood edits are not a thing! You also cannot have two separate halfblood types at once in one lion. This is because it would just get too complicated to roll. If two halfblood parents breed, it will roll at a 30% chance to pass (Stack 15%) but if a cub rolls for it, it will be a 50/50 which blood type they get.

What can be made into a Halfblood/ fullblood design?
A halfblood/fullblood must be something that could 'naturally' (believably) pair-able with a lion. This means anything that is medium or large feline shaped. (Leopards...cheetahs...jaguars). These do not have to be real species. They can include things that are largely big-cat inspired but fantastical as well. (Manticore, Nemean lion, chimera, ect)

What is the difference between Blooded edits and a Gene splice?

  • A gene splice can be ANY creature, while blood edits can only be feline or feline-esque.

  • Gene splice (unlike full bloods) are always on the original base and are not custom lined

  • Gene splice rolls ONCE and does not have the chance of a fullblood or halfblood edit pass/other edits passing. It is a single edit

  • Gene splice is considered "Artificial" combination, while Fullbloods are considered "Natural" combination

  • Gene splice can have more unique/ radical edits than a fullblood or halfblood might
