Fluid regularly leaks into body tissues from the blood. The lymphatic system is a network of tubes throughout the body that drains this fluid (called lymph) from tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. Fluid retention (oedema) occurs when the fluid isn’t removed from the tissues.
The two broad categories of fluid retention include generalised oedema, when swelling occurs throughout the body, and localised oedema, when particular parts of the body are affected.
The wide range of causes includes the body’s reaction to hot weather, a high salt intake, pregnancy and the hormones associated with the menstrual cycle. However, it’s recommended you refer client's to see their GP for full diagnosis, because oedema can be symptomatic of serious medical conditions such as heart, kidney or liver disease.
Most of the time, swollen limbs can be treated with a simple massage using several essential oils and by opening up other channels first Eg. If the oedema is in the feet, the abdomen, thigh and groin should be massaged first.
The effects of these treatments for each person vary highly depending on body composition, so it is important to be careful when you try them out.
Chamomile oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties, works wonders as a treatment for swollen limbs.
Lavender oil can be used in a blend to massage and ease the discomfort of swelling in different body parts.
Tea tree oil can be applied directly onto the skin without mixing or diluting it with other carrier oils. A few drops should be enough to treat the swollen area. Massage using outward strokes, moving from the feet up towards the knees to allow the trapped fluid to spread out.
Juniper oil is another one of the essential oils for swelling. It is great for easing inflammation that results from fluid retention.
Fennel oil is an effective way to get rid of swelling, effective when mixed with other types of essential oils. A recommended mixture of oils would be 15 drops each of cypress oil and fennel oil, mixed in with about 30 ml of evening primrose oil. Massaging the affected swollen areas is a quick way to relieve the pain and discomfort and help the inflammation go away.
