This presentation explores the power of econarrative to build worlds – worlds that existed in the past, exist in the present and will exist in the future. Of key importance is how the constructed worlds of econarrative can influence perception and behaviour and lead to actual changes in the future by promoting behaviour that either protects or destroys the ecosystems that life depends on. The presentation begins with a theoretical exploration of econarrative, describing the linguistic features that build temporarily and logical connection among participants, events, actions and their consequences. This is followed by analysis of a range of texts from creation narratives that tell stories of the start of the world to apocalyptic narratives that predict its end. And in between those two extremes are narratives which speak of a bright future which can come into being through concerted action and ethical leadership.
