Whilst the NEU is known to turn away wastelanders at its borders, the same cannot be said for children. Orphans under the age of 18 are welcomed into the NEU without any inquiry into their backgrounds. However, there is one catch; if these children cannot be adopted by a family, they will be enrolled at a military boarding school. They are required to stay at these institutions until they reach the age at which they are eligible to serve in the USRF, getting a pay increase and a higher rank than other soldiers. The 17th is a dedicated unit of these soldiers which has seen deployment on the Southern Front and in the Canadian War but have recently been redeployed to the Great Lakes.
