The Thirty Year War is categorized by heavy attrition, which slowly but surely chipped away at any form of uniformity which the then Early Militia of the NEU had. Consisting of of pre-Flash US Armed Forces veterans, Eastern Armed Forces servicemembers and even volunteer civilians, the NEU's first land army was colloquially known as the Early Militia. Its uniform and equipment was a melting pot of different eras ranging from pre-Flash surplus equipment to armor and armaments produced After the Flash, most of which were designs that drew inspiration from pre-2071 military equipment. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is generally how USRF servicemembers feel about Thirty Year War equipment even in 2163, as nearly 80 year old equipment continues to be fielded to this day.
The Southern War Era is widely regarded as the first time that the NEU modernized its fighting forces since the Thirty Year War. Until this point, most equipment used had been tired military surplus left over from the many battles that had previously been fought in the decadent ruins of the American Northeast. Millions of ND went into upgrading every aspect of the military, from new personal protective equipment to modern weapon platforms, to facelifted vehicles and USRF forts. Most importantly, the USRF now had a standardized uniform, giving them the infamous look that they are known for to this day. Green fatigues and black gear became synonymous with the NEU's armed forces, with tales of the faction and its exploits reaching even the most remote of settlements in the wasteland.
First introduced alongside the SR-51 in 2151, the Individual Body Armor Kit was developed as part of a standardization effort made within the Northeast Union armed forces with tensions rising with the Southern Union. The design was rushed, leading to many issues with the armor. The Individual Body Armor Kit is rated to stop up to and including 1-2 6.8x45mm US rounds, and is known to provide ample protection against laser impacts, indirect grenade shrapnel, and ballistic impacts. Despite the protection it is considered too bulky and tends to slow down the user, making it quite unpopular with servicemembers. There is additionally many noted cases of spalling where the armor shatters, which can prove fatal for the user.
The Canada War put the USRF's tired and outdated facade on all full display. Up to 70% of all casualties during this conflict can be attributed to a lack of cold appropriate wear, which is ironic considering the NEU's geographical setting. Decades of conflict in the American South and Cuba had essentially shaped the USRF into an army capable mostly of fighting in temperate and warm terrain, and less so in the cold, with minor engagements in the Great Lakes and Halifax against separatists. As a result of these shortcomings, the gargantuan NEU military industrial complex sought out to modernize the kit of the average USRF soldier, and give each and every one the capability to not only fight in one terrain, but in all of them; from the blistering cold north, to the scorching hot south.
The MASS (Multi-terrain Armored Soldier System) program was the Material- and Acquisition Command Team's response to the USRF's ineffectiveness in cold weather terrain, as it became evident during the ground invasion of Canada. A hundred thousand dollar funding effort has kickstarted the MASS program enough to equip every active duty service member with everything that the program has to offer. Or so it would be, were it not for heavy handed corruption among USRF quartermasters, who prefer to pawn off new equipment for a secondary income, or the many miles of bureaucratic red tape that slows things down considerably. In practice, here is what a USRF service member is meant to have, even though most troops continue to field gear used during the Thirty Year and Southern Wars:
CWU [Cold Weather Uniform] - A 6-layer uniform system meant for temperate and cold environments. Worn on top of the RCU uniform.
RCU [Reclamation Combat Uniform] - Variants exist of the RCU, including the RCU-W: a lightweight and pocketless version for warm weather environments.
