I’ve worked in the voluntary sector, including frontline debt advice roles, since 2018. I first joined Unite Community as a student, where I campaigned to scrap zero hours contracts. I’m now a H&S rep in a national charity and secretary of NE/403/15 branch.
I’ve won campaigns in both unrecognised and recognised workplaces, including:
I also led a winning anti-Austerity campaign which stopped the privatisation of ten local authority nurseries.
If elected, my priorities are:
A national 4-Day-Week campaign in response to increasing workloads and low pay in our sector
Fighting Austerity. Local and central government funding cuts threaten our members’ jobs. I back Unite 2021 Conference policy, calling on Labour councils to refuse to pass on cuts
More support for members in smaller charities to win recognition and better conditions –like Gipsil members in my branch
Building strength across our sector. Charity strike wins at Shelter, Hull CAB etc show collective action works. We must properly resource our reps to defend all members and ensure all charity workplaces are ready to take action to improve pay and conditions
Fighting the far-right, including more support for charity members in workplaces under threat
Ensuring our union properly re-examines our relationship with Labour, as our Conference this year demanded
More campaigns with Unite Community and Retired members on issues like benefit cuts and winter fuel cuts
Using our sector members’ vast expertise to support the wider union, for example, environmental charity members informing our Just Transition policy, welfare rights members shaping our campaign against disability cuts
We can only achieve this if we are a member-led, democratic, diverse union, promoting solidarity between different groups of members.
