I’ve led successful strike action against the effects of privatisation, winning in 2023 the return of 1800 NHS ancillary workers across five hospitals, to direct employment.
I am standing for the Unite Executive to build on the achievements in Unite since the election of Sharon Graham as our General Secretary in 2021.
2.5% is the shameful increase proposed by Labour for NHS workers in 2026. Left unchallenged this would again see emergency payments for bands 2 and 3 workers as wages fall below national minimum wage levels.
If elected I will fight for the restoration of real pay to that all public sector workers enjoyed before 2010 and link this with campaigning that aims at renationalisation on a democratic basis, of outsourced public services including the extension of public ownership into the pharmaceutical and medical equipment supply industries with former owners only compensated on proven need.
Wage suppression is inextricably tied to increasing privatisation. This is why I support the review of Unites political strategy agreed at our 2025 policy conference.
We must maintain our record of being prepared to take militant industrial action, whoever the employer is.
I totally support:
2021 Unite Conference policy to call on Labour councils to refuse to pass on cuts that affect our members and our communities.
The emergency motion that was passed at this year’s Unite Conference in support of our Birmingham bin worker members, and for a debate in our union about our relationship with Labour.
Health workers & the broader Unite membership will be appalled & angered at the military intervention by Trump in Venezuela. The trade union movement must condemn vociferously this attempt to intimidate the Latin American working class and poor. I stand with their struggle against imperialism and for internationalism and socialism.”
