The Applied Environmental Microbiology Lab (AEML) at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) explores the diverse roles and applications of microorganisms in human health, biotechnology, and extreme environments. Our research focuses on understanding microbial interactions and harnessing microorganisms as innovative tools to address challenges ranging from antimicrobial resistance to space exploration.
The Applied Environmental Microbiology Lab (AEML) is affiliated with the School of Biological Sciences at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in the Republic of Korea.
Our research explores the remarkable diversity of microorganisms and their potential applications in human health, biotechnology, and extreme environments. A major focus of our laboratory is the development of biological strategies to control pathogenic and multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly in response to the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
To achieve this, we study a broad range of microorganisms and microbial products with antimicrobial potential. Our research includes predatory bacteria such as Bdellovibrio and like organisms (BALOs), bacteriophages that specifically infect bacterial hosts, Live Biotherapeutic Products (LBPs) derived from beneficial microorganisms, and bioactive microbial metabolites such as violacein. We investigate not only their antimicrobial activities, but also their mechanisms of action, interactions with target bacteria, and potential applications as alternatives or complementary approaches to conventional antibiotics.
Our interests also extend beyond terrestrial environments. Through our work in space microbiology, we investigate how microgravity and space-associated conditions influence microbial physiology, behavior, and microbial interactions. These studies allow us to explore both the challenges posed by microorganisms during spaceflight and the possibility of using beneficial or predatory microorganisms as biological tools in future space missions.
By integrating fundamental microbiology with applied research, we aim to better understand microbial interactions and translate the unique capabilities of microorganisms into innovative solutions for medicine, biotechnology, and space exploration.
