In the U.S., public schools are free. Families may have to pay extra for things that aren't in the regular school budget. These are called school fees. The amount depends on the school and grade level. It's not paying for school- just for certain activities or supplies.
Talk to the school counselor or office: Some schools offer discounts or payment plans.
Apply for free or reduced lunch: Schools can help families who qualify.
Look for community programs: Some groups donate school supplies or help with fees.
Waivers: Sometimes, schools can give parents a payment plan if they have a hard time paying. They may also cancel certain fees.
Most elementary schools do not have fees, but parents may need to pay for:
School supplies (notebooks, pencils, crayons)
Field trips (small fees for bus rides or museum visits)
Lunch and snacks (unless the child gets free or reduced lunch)
Laptop Fees (If the school issues laptops to each child, sometimes there is a fee associated with it.)
Students do not have fees for going to school but Middle School students may have other fees:
Small fees for elective classes that require supplies. (art, music, etc.)
Yearbooks and school pictures (optional but available for purchase)
