To finish high school and get a diploma, your child needs to do certain things.
Each state, and sometimes each school district, has different graduation requirements.
Think of it like a recipe for a cake. You need all the ingredients and must follow the steps to make it right. Graduation requirements are the "ingredients" and "steps" for finishing high school.
Graduation requirements can vary by state and school district.
It's important to meet with your child's school counselor. Your child needs to enroll in the correct classes to graduate on time.
These requirements may be different in each state, but they usually include:
What are the Requirements?
Course credits:
Your child needs to take and pass certain classes.
Examples: Math, English, Science, History.
Each class is worth "credits," and they need a certain number of credits to graduate.
Specific subjects:
There are usually required subjects, like:
4 years of English
3-4 years of Math
3-4 years of Science
3-4 years of Social Studies (History, etc.)
Sometimes, there is a physical education or health requirement.
Some states and districts require a foreign language or an arts class.
Passing grades:
Your child needs to get passing grades in his or her classes.
This usually means a "D" or higher, but some schools may have higher standards.
Standardized tests:
States require students to pass “end-of-course” tests when they finish taking the course. They must pass the course to graduate.
The tests check to be sure students have learned the things they should know in that course.
Attendance:
Your child needs to go to school every day unless they’re sick.
Too many absences can prevent graduation.
Community service:
Some schools require students to complete a certain number of hours of community service.
This means volunteering and helping others.
There are different types of Diplomas students can get.
Standard diploma: The most common diploma for all students.
Advanced diploma: A diploma with extra courses for students preparing for college.
CTE (Career & Technical Education) Diploma: This is a special diploma that includes job training. Your child can learn skills for specific jobs in areas like healthcare, business, or technology.
GED (General Education Diploma): If your child leaves school before finishing, they can take a test later to earn their diploma. The GED shows that your child has learned the basic things they would have learned in high school.
Why Graduation Is Important:
Helps students get better jobs.
Allows students to go to college or trade school.
Gives more opportunities for a successful future.
