What are food labels?

Interview with Dr. Christopher Simons, Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University discussing "Food Label Perceptions".

Food labels provide consumers information about the product they are purchasing. All food packages must have 5 pieces of information: product identity, net content, nutrition facts, ingredients/ allergen statement, and a signature line. All the other information found on food packaging is optional. Many companies include additional information to highlight product features, benefits, and production standards. As a consumer, it can be difficult to navigate the sea of logos, statements, and claims found on food packages. This website provides information on commonly seen labels and food labeling terminology. Click on the tabs on the left to be directed to specific food label categories.
