Environmental Claims

The terms "environmentally-friendly", "eco-friendly", "environmentally responsible" and "green" are not legally defined by the federal government. However, there are many organizations and governments who strive to protect the environment in various ways. This has lead to numerous third party certification agencies and organizations that will approve food products that meet their environmental standards. These standards include areas specializing in animal protection, aquatic protection, coffee, wine, carbon footprint reduction, chemical use limitations, broad environmental policies, integrated pest management, manufacturing and production practices, and organic certifications (visit the Organic page to learn more about the National Organic Program). Click on a label to be taken to the organization’s website, where detailed standards can be found.
