RI GSE for Civics and Government (C&G1): Understand the concept of government, its functions, and the differences among the forms of government.
Lessons/activities on forms of government are great opportunities to extend and deepen learning beyond the content or standards (Garcia et al, 2017)
Instead of solely focusing on the US government, you could make the lesson multinational/cultural
Have students compare and contrast the US Form/Branches of Government, with that of countries and cultures represented in your classroom
In the district I've worked in, this would be Mexico, Guatemala, and Portugal
Students could put their findings into an organizer in any language, like a Venn diagram, and then share them for the class in English
Provide students with a text for analysis. For example, FDR's Pearl Harbor Speech
Have students read the text in English
As students read, have them engage with the text critically (highlight, margin notes, organizer, questions, circle new vocabulary, etc.) using all linguistic features they are comfortable with
Helps students leverage all of their linguistic strengths to interpret new learning and language (Garcia et al, 2017)
