Help develop confidence among MLLs and demonstrate that you value language and perspectives other than EnglishÂ
Connects prior units/lessons to new learning, for example connecting the World Wars
EX: "In your most comfortable language, turn and talk to a partner about the results of WWI and how that might be a cause of WWII. You can use the organizer we made about the conclusion of WWI to help you!"
Allowing students to use Languages Other Than English (LOTE) enables them to experiment with language, social interaction, and learning in ways that may not be possible in English alone. This fosters a deeper and more enriched learning experience and affirms all linguistic features (Delgado Lopera, 2020)
KWLs (Know (Saber), Want to know (Querer saber), and Learned (Aprendido) help students organize thinking surrounding sources, textbooks, and authentic texts
Providing a multilingual template (linked) and encouraging home language(s) use allows B/MLLs to represent their thinking and language while accessing past learning authentically. This will provide you with many unique historical perspectives to interact with as an educator
Connects past content to new learning (K), provides expectations (K), encourages critical thinking (W), and records new learning (L). Also, connects new language to learned language
Please encourage students to engage with the template using the linguistic features they are most comfortable with and use visual aids and graphics
