DBS & Housing Checks

When you submit your guests' visa applications, your local authorities will be notified. They should therefore get in touch with you about these checks without your instigation.

However, as soon as you know your guests' arrival dates, please contact your local authorities (see Schools etc. page for more info). For West Sussex, email communities@westsussex.gov.uk or call 0330 222 7980.

  • Do I need these checks before visa approval?

    • No: the local authority will be notified once your guests' visa applications have been submitted and you have registered your interest to host/sponsor on the UK government Homes for Ukraine website.

  • Do I need these checks before my guests arrive?

    • Not necessarily. Basically, your guests can come as soon as their visas are approved. There are currently some delays in these checks, so sometimes checks will happen after they arrive. However, informing the local authority as soon as you have an arrival date may speed things up.

  • How do I obtain DBS checks?

    • The local authorities will arrange and pay for your DBS checks to be done. You do not need to contact them for this. You may obtain your own DBS checks, but we do not recommend this at this stage.

  • Who needs DBS checks?

    • You and anyone else in the household aged 16 or older.

  • What documents will be needed for DBS checks?

    • The local authority will provide more information, but three types of identification will be required:photo ID, proof of address, and another form of ID, such as a bill.

  • How do I have my property checked for suitability?

    • The local authorities will arrange to have your property checked for suitability. You do not have to contact them for this.

  • What constitutes "appropriate housing"?
