For this project, I researched the impacts of social media and reflected on the specific societal impacts surrounding it.
My results for the “Am I ADDICTED to social media?” QUIZ demonstrated that I am addicted and use social media more than the average person. The results stated:
"You NEED to get a grip on your social media habits! Scrolling through social media is your number one past time - you're never off the .gram, or TikTok, or Twitter or... (insert your favourite platform here). You spend an excessive amount of your day on social media, feeling that if something isn't recorded and posted on one of your accounts it didn't really happen."
This made me realize, the first thing I do when I wake up is open TikTok or Instagram. Not to mention, when the TikTok was momentarily banned, I felt like the world was ending. This was definetly a wake up call and I feel like I can reduce my usage by setting up a screen time and using my time on more productive things.
I chose this statistic because it is interesting that addiction to YouTube is one of the few things that most teens have in common. Also, I would have assumed that TikTok would have more people who visit it daily, however, it makes sense since YouTube has been a huge part of many Gen Z lives, including my own. This relates to me because I would say the top 3 are definitely my most used platforms. My screen time on TikTok was 8 hours daily over the summer, this made me realize I am not alone in my addiction.
I believe that the emergence of social media platforms had an initial positive foundation that helped people across the world network and connect with each other, it created an amazing space for cultures to clash and people to learn and build communities they could not have if they were restricted to their own small circle. However, like all things, when it is overused it can be addicting and before you know it we have iPad kids who cannot stand a second without Cocomelon and even grown adults who believe they cannot have fun without others seeing it on social media. I see this discourse a lot, where people my age claim it is sad to see the younger generations not being able to experience the joy of quality time with other humans without a screen, and I whole heartedly agree. I believe social media has stolen the childhood of many of the younger generation, and that is the consequence of parents not putting regulations on their children's screen times. Social media is not inherently a bad thing at all, however, like all things in life it needs to be used in regulation.
In this project, I faced the truth of how addicting social media can be and I was able to learn that research shows that majority of teens struggle with using some form of social media daily. I learned that I spend an insane amount of time on it when I could be doing more productive things, and overall this lesson felt like a wakeup call to make it a mission to use my time more wisely.
