Principal Investigator
Associate Professor, Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology
Paul Borsa, PhD, ATC, FACSM is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology. Dr. Borsa received his PhD in Exercise Physiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh where he also received his Bachelors and Masters degrees with concentrations in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. Prior to his position at the University of Florida, Dr. Borsa was an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University where he also directed the Sports Medicine Research Lab. He was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan where he directed the Shoulder Kinematics Laboratory. Dr. Borsa is now the director of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory at the University of Florida. Dr. Borsa has a strong background in conducting clinical research using exercise-induced injury models designed to: (a) identify psychophysical predictors of heightened pain and functional limitations, (b) identify the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for pain and inflammation, and (c) improve functional recovery after injury. Current research in his lab is focused on the effects of injury and pain on movement and his most current research is focused on the use of phytocannabinoids (cannabidiol or CBD) for improving symptomatic response and functional recovery in response to musculoskeletal injury and disease. Dr. Borsa's research has been funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as well as through contracts with private companies.
Research Coordinator
PhD Student, Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology
John Stauffer is a second-year PhD Student at the University of Florida in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine. John received his Bachelor's degree in Health, Exercise and Sports Studies from Denison University in 2021. In 2023, John received his Master of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. He is currently the University of Florida Sports Medicine Laboratory's Research Coordinator. He is currently involved in clinical research, observing pain management and modulation through drug and technology mechanisms.
