About
The University of Florida Bat Houses are the world’s largest occupied bat houses! This popular attraction offers the opportunity to watch approximately 500,000 bats fly out of their houses into the sunset. There are three unique kinds of bats that call these houses home, including evening bats, Southeastern bats, and Brazilian free-tailed bats.
When and Where
The houses are located on the northside of Museum Road and across from Lake Alice on UF campus. If you are interested in visiting the houses, arrive before sunset to find a spot to observe the bats. There are benches along the fence line on Museum Road, as well as across the street near Lake Alice. If seating is full, there are sidewalks to stand and observe. The bats normally emerge during a 15 to 20 minute period after sunset, before total darkness on calm, warm evenings when temperatures are above 65 degrees fahrenheit. Rain, wind, and cold temperatures will affect how many bats emerge on an evening. Check the weather when planning a visit.
Additional Info
There are no fees to watch the bats and parking is free in the lot adjacent to the houses! All parking on campus has clearly marked signage for when and where you can park.
Many students say watching the bats fly after sunset is a key part of the Gator experience. It’s a great way to get outside and create memorable experiences with new friends.
