Udaan Vidyalaya - LIEP TO SCHOOL

Our Vision

The idea behind Udaan was conceived three years ago, when we realized that despite tremendous progress in inclusivity in schools, there was a severe dearth of quality afterschool academic support. The resolution to leave no child behind may have been well intentioned but it diluted the quality of education at government schools and significantly increased the burden on teachers
Further the ‘no detention policy up to class 8’ instituted by most state governments including Delhi meant that a large number of students were passing through the school system without any significant learning outcomes up to that point. This is true especially for the students from poor and marginalized families
There should also be a way for students who have fallen through the cracks, who have been unable to progress beyond class 8 due to the no fail policy and inadequate support up to that point, to be brought back to the mainstream through alternate academic or vocational programs.

Local inclusive education program (LIEP)

This program was started in 2017 to provide learners of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) from south Delhi with academic support.

The teachers at Udaan in conjunction with the South Delhi Nodal center (Akshya Pratishthan School -Centre Code : 450061) for NIOS have taught over 350 students in the past six academic semesters since 2017. The students instructed at this center have significantly outperformed the national average.

Community need for the project: The population of Mehrauli is about 2.8 lakhs and there are nearly 1.1 lakh children of school going age that reside in this locality. There are 6 government schools catering to them, all of which follow this no detention rule up to class 8.

Due to the reasons stated above a significant percentage of students reach the class 9 level with inadequate skills and fail to clear the annual examinations. This results in a dropout level much higher for class 9 than any other academic class. At this juncture, many students terminate their studies. In the absence of a Secondary/Senior secondary school level diploma or a school leaving certificate their prospects for finding employment are adversely affected

Desired Outcome and Evaluation: The LIEP-NIOS program currently has a passing percentage of 92%. As opposed to the National NIOS pass percentage of 37% in the past ten years.
