Lesson 20

Scene

In this lesson, students will create a project that experiments with backdrops, like a story with multiple scenes or a slideshow.

Objectives

Computer Science Objectives

  • Students will be able to create a project that experiments with changing backdrops, like a story with multiple scenes or a slideshow
  • Students will gain more familiarity with the computational concepts of events and parallelism and the practice of experimenting and iterating

Language Objectives

  • Students will use knowledge of language and its convention to explain how to create and change scenes in Scratch.
  • Students will use general and academic language to provide peer feedback in speaking and writing

Language Frames

Emerging

I used a block to ____

I used a block to change the scene.

Expanding

I used _____ to change the backdrop

Using switch background block, I changed my backdrop ___ The result is ____

Bridging

Using the switch background block, I changed my background from ____ to ____.

Using the switch background block, I changed my background from ____ to ____ and then I changed my background from ____ to ____.

Lesson Plan

Lesson 20: Storytelling - Scenes

Vocabulary

  • algorithm: A list of steps that you can follow to finish a task.
  • event: An action that causes something to happen.
  • initialization: Assign an initial (beginning) value to an object (or variable).
  • loops: The action of doing something over and over again.
  • parallelism: Making things happen at the same time.
  • program: An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine.
  • sequence: A particular order of steps or events.

Standards

Computer Science

  • CSTA 1B-AP-10: Create programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals
  • CSTA 1B-AP-13: Use an iterative process to plan the development of a program by including others' perspectives and considering user preferences.
  • CSTA 1B-AP-15: Test and debug a program or algorithm to ensure it runs as intended.

English Language Arts

  • ELA L.3.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
  • ELA L.3.6: Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships.
  • ELA RI.3.5: Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.
  • ELA SL.3.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

English Language Development

  • Interacting with the Language: Collaborative

1. Exchanging information and ideas

3. Offering opinions

  • Learning about how English Works

1. Understanding text structure

2. Understanding cohesion
