Introducing Scratch

In this lesson, students will have their first opportunity to explore Scratch. They will log in for the first time and explore the project editor, coding blocks, and Scratch stage.

Objectives

Computer Science Objectives

Students will be introduced to computational creation with the Scratch programming environment.
Students will be able to imagine possibilities for their own Scratch-based computational creations.
Students will explore the Scratch online community and review the Scratch community guidelines.
Students will engage in an exploratory, hands-on experience with Scratch.

Language Objectives

Students will be able to explain the different ways in which they have used computers.
Students will be able to use noun phrases with adjectives to describe the types of creative projects they have made with computers.
Students will be able to contribute to conversations and express ideas by asking and answering yes-no and wh- questions and responding using short phrases.
Students will be able to describe the Scratch projects that they would like to make.

Lesson 1: Introducing Scratch

Vocabulary

computer science: A field in which people use the power of computers to solve big problems.
project editor: A feature of the Scratch online community that allows projects to be modified. This includes the script area (where scripts are assembled), the sprite area (where sprites can be manipulated), and the stage area (where sprites are positioned and where backgrounds can be accessed).
sprite: A media object that performs actions on the stage in a Scratch project.
stage: The background of a Scratch project. The stage can have scripts, backdrops (costumes), and sounds, similar to a sprite.
