Teamwork makes the dream work! This is what’s called a “Three Sisters Garden”. It is a method of planting crops that has been used for hundreds of years. Some plants need specific nutrients that are not as abundant in soil. Other plants deposit these nutrients when they grow. So, by planting these plants together, every plant provides for every other plant and the garden flourishes!
A traditional three sisters garden contains corn, beans and squash; where the three plants help each other cultivate. Corn provides the place for beans to climb (like an organized trestle), while beans add more nitrogen to the soil, and squash helps retain soil moisture and stifle weed growth.
