Rainwater Harvesting : Survey and Implementation

A detailed study of the household survey statistics revealed that two of the adopted villages, Riktoli and Indapurwadi located in Chiplun, Ratnagiri district were facing a major water crisis issue every year despite of heavy rainfall.A geographical survey of the above mentioned villages was conducted on March 30, 2019 to find the potential for implementation of Rainwater Harvesting project. A team of 4 students and one faculty members from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. N. Bhostekar, who had a specialization in this domain, surveyed the geographical conditions. This survey aimed, to learn about the problems that the locals faced due to scarcity of water, in agriculture and daily chores. Post survey, the team conducted an official meeting with the villagers and officials of Gram Panchayat to get more details about the situation.
A plan of action for the project implementation was proposed during the meet. The villagers further suggested the team to discuss its ideas of implementation with the migrants of the village living in Mumbai.
A session was arranged on April 4, 2019 as per the suggestions of the villagers. This interaction revealed that the migrants too had made an attempt to recharge the bore well but unfortunately couldn’t succeed. They shared their expectations and views on the proposed project and assured of their co-operation.
On May 19, 2019 Rain Water Harvesting project was implemented by Prof. N.Bhostekar and villagers of Riktoli. By conventional digging method a pit was formed near the bore well and in this way bore well recharge pit was done. To pump the water out, bore well equipped with the necessary requirements such as motor, electric cables, etc.
