Backstory
The story goes that AtomiCo Global's first attempt at mining in Mount Whitley in search of alien tech and mysterious energy sources was here at the base of the mountain. Things seemed hopeful at first, but they were reckless with the technology they were using which they barely understood...
CATASTROPHE!
A huge chasm began to form at the edge of their mines that threatened to collapse the whole mountain destroying all of Enderby Cove and causing the priceless extraterrestrial artifacts to be lost forever!
Luckily, some scientists were able to stop the chasm from expanding even further swallowing the mountain, but the mines had to abandoned and evacuated immediately.
Since then, the Gentoo Alliance have begun to use the caves as a secret passage to get in an out of parts of Enderby Cove undetected and even set up a suspension bridge over The Chasm. When the mines were abandoned, a lot of very valuable and dangerous equipment was left behind and both Gentoo and AtomiCo Global would love to recover or salvage it. It's up to guests who they choose to help as they explore these lovely caverns or if they just want to see the crystalline patterns in the icy environment, slide like the penguins do, and enjoy the atmosphere without getting involved with the conflict at all.
Icicle Cove - Play Area
The half of the Caverns facing the naturalistic part of Tundraland is itself set up to feel like naturally formed caves. Winding paths, frozen rock work, a meandering feel, some wide open spaces, a focus on beauty and wonder. These caves have existed for hundreds if not thousands of years before humans even set foot on this land and as long as AtomiCo Global doesn't accidentally destroy them, these caves will persist long after we are gone. The Gentoo alliance have found these caves and use them as a hideout as well as a way to connect to the abandoned mines. Plus, they can just be a fun place to play around.
Much of this half of the caverns is taken up by Icicle Cove. A fun play area aimed at younger videos where they can run around, climb over rocks, crawl through tunnels, slide down the ice, and have a great time! The back wall of Icicle Cove is a curved, slowly sloping path that levels out into a relaxing sitting area where parents can unwind while looking out over their kids playing below. Naturally, slides as well as sloped pathways connect the elevated overlook to the main paly area so parents are never far from their kids. By some of the larger slides, etchings in the icy walls show penguins sliding around an playing games too!
The Chasm - Suspension Bridge
Connecting the two halves of the cavern is a suspension bridge set up by the Gentoo Alliance over The Chasm. To guests, it will look like the bouncy bridge goes over a bottomless abyss, but in reality the Chasm is only a few feet deep but some clever lighting and fog effects give the illusion of it being a dangerous rift threatening to swallow the mountain!
AtomiCo Global Mine Tunnel - Maze
The half of the caverns guests can enter from the Industrial side of the land is the abandoned mineshafts dug by AtomiCo Global in their pursuit of intergalactic treasures. Since the company had to make a hasty exit after The Chasm began to form, the mines are full of sci-fi equipment and frozen doodads. This area is manmade clearly dug out or drilled through. The paths wind and intersect creating a maze of tunnels intersecting with each other leading to cave ins and dead ends caused by broken machinery stuck in the way.
If guests can navigate all the way to the back of the mines, they are rewarded with a secret tunnel dug by the Gentoo Alliance connecting to the elevated area of Icicle Cove connecting the two sides in another way and serving as a natural endpoint for the maze. Aside from that reward, guests can also find audio logs scattered through the mines waiting to be discovered. These are from scientist, executives, miners, and all kinds of workers from the early days of AtomiCo Global's work in these mines before the Chasm. Discovering them all adds a lot to the story of Tundraland and fills in a lot of gaps for guests seeking to learn more of the tale of the land as a whole and the Caverns.
While they might be a clunky storytelling device, audio logs have become a staple in video games that feature and exploration element and these has become a big deal for younger enthusiasts whose favorite games often have multiple Game Theory videos explaining the deep lore hidden in these logs. Featuring the recordings of AtomiCo Global's employees here keeps the Tundraland Cavern Exploration feeling like escapism into the world of fiction that the younger guests of today adore similar to the original Tom Sawyer Island taking guests into the world of children's literature. Anyone can listen to these logs, but if you tap your Magic Band and have it linked to your Play Disney App, then you save the logs to your account so you can relisten whenever to look for hidden codes and the deep lore.
Recovery Expedition / Salvage Rescue - Play Disney App Game
Beyond the audio logs, something else is scattered throughout the mine tunnels. All of the very valuable, dangerous, and high tech equipment that AtomiCo Global had to abandon. Each with a pedestal next to it that can be scanned with your Magic Band. This game works like a scavenger hunt or the Bounty Hunter Game in Galaxy's Edge where you can't just scan all the prizes as you go. You have to start at one of the two hubs for the game and be given missions of specific pieces of tech to find, then go scan it, and then return for your prize.
If you start in the Gentoo Alliance Outpost in Icicle Cavern, then you'll be helping the resistance to gather important tools to finally get the upper hand against AtomiCo Global by playing the Salvage Rescue game.
If you start at the AtomiCo Global Recovery Expedition Outpost in the Mines, you'll be tasked with recovering the lost company resources as their newest expendable valuable employee! Functionally, both of these experience are virtually identical, but the Play Disney App will keep track of your score and you can get different bonuses and rewards in the app depending on what side you help. Any ticket or Magic Band will allow you to play the game, but it is best experienced with a Magic Band+ which will vibrate in different ways to let you know if you are getting hotter or colder in your quest for the salvage you are searching for and will light up different colors to interact with the technology.
