Why the rīpeka (the cross) pattern?
The rīpeka pattern is a design that looks like a cross. This pattern is important in Māori culture because it shows the influence of Christianity, which brought new values and ideas about helping others. When Māori people use this cross shape in their art, they are not only adding a new element to their traditional designs but also showing respect for the impact that Christianity has had on their society. By including the rīpeka pattern, they acknowledge how these Christian values have become a part of their culture and how they have shaped their community. This blending of traditional Māori art with Christian symbols helps to honour and recognise the importance of these new ideas in their lives.
