Why the Niho Taniwha (teeth of the taniwha) pattern?
Niho taniwha means "teeth of the taniwha." It can symbolise a historian, a chief, or hospitality. There is a saying, “He pike he taniwha,” which means there is a taniwha at every bend in the river. A taniwha is a mythical water creature from legend. The saying meant that at every river bend, there was a meeting house with a chief and warriors. The taniwha was believed to either welcome peaceful visitors or protect the iwi from attacks.
