Why the pātiki (flounder) design?
Pātiki (flounder) designs are based on the diamond shape of the flounder fish. This fish is important because it feeds the iwi. Women would catch flounders at night when they were most active, while their men were asleep. The flounder represents plentiful, good times and is a common pattern on kete (woven bags).
Te Pātikitiki, or the flounder, is a key symbol in many marae. It stands for plenty and is seen as food for the brain, imagination, and dreams.
