Why the Kaokao (armpit) pattern?
Long ago, there was a special pattern called the kaokao pattern. This pattern was made to honour brave warriors who had the protection of the war god, Tumatauenga. It represented courage and preparedness.
In those days, some Māori iwi were friends, but others often fought with each other. Because they were often in battle, the warriors developed very strong arms and armpits from using their spears. If a warrior had strong arms and armpits, he had a better chance of winning in battle.
To prepare for a fight, a warrior would stand on a mat with the kaokao pattern. While he stood there, people would say prayers to give him strength for battle.
The kaokao pattern was also known as 'takapau wharenui,' when it was used on important marriage mats long ago. So, the kaokao pattern was not just for warriors but also had a special place in important ceremonies like weddings.
