Field surveys of Ambon, Banda, and Amahai-Elpaputih, Maluku Province
Date: July–August 2021
Location: Ambon, Banda, and Amahai - Elpaputih, Maluku Province, Indonesia
The Seram earthquake and tsunami known as the "Bahaya Seram" in 1899, with a death toll of 4,000 people, as well as the Ambon earthquake and tsunami in 1674, with a tsunami height of 8-10 meters and claiming 2,332 deaths, were both catastrophic disasters in Maluku Province. Team WP 4 performed site visits and interviews in Ambon, Banda, and Amahai-Elpaputih at various institutions and societies. There are some efforts by the government, NGOs, and universities to develop the infrastructure for disaster mitigation. As the outputs of this survey, the information about the gap in the implementation of disaster risk reduction, such as the lack of coordination among the institution was detected. The results indicated that there is a lack of evacuation route maps for Ambon city and villages. Furthermore, there is no appropriate coastal protection in tsunami-affected areas (Galkal-Hative Kecil and Hutumury). Therefore, the town remains in the existing high-risk earthquake zone.
