Outings come in all shapes and sizes, from snow camping to summer camp, high adventures to car camping. On every outing, we operate in our patrols. Whether organizing food or sharing tenting arrangements, we have our scouts plan and organize ahead of time within their patrols, communicating with the Scout in Charge (SIC) and Adult in Charge (AIC), who communicate plans and instructions before every outing. Read more below for more standard info, and check out the Cooking on Outings, and How to Pack pages
Most camping trips are within a few hours of us, so we plan on driving (Some specialty outings we would take a plane to, if they are far enough away). A common plan is carpooling, we often ask for parent volunteers or the ASM's who are already attending the outing to assist in driving scouts, and we all meet at a designated time at Immanuel Lutheran Church (our charter organization), divide up into vehicles, and depart. That way we all arrive at the outing around the same time, and we make sure that every scout has a way to get there.
In our troop, we allow scouts to share tents or bring their own personal tent, but we have a few rules. If scouts wish to share tents, they must be within 2 years of each others age (for example a 13 y/o scout may share with a 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 y/o scouts, but no older or younger). The scouts sharing must also be the same gender, and in the same patrol. If there are any special cases, ask a patrol leader or Scout Master.
Similar to meetings, we have expectations for uniforms on outings. For insurance and safety reasons, we ask that when carpooling with the troop, scouts wear their Class A uniforms. During the outing, we prefer if scouts wear their Class B uniforms. Depending on the outing, we may require more uniform use than just transportation. For instance, events like Camporee and Summer Camps have morning and evening flag ceremonies, in which scouts are asked to wear their full Class A uniforms. The SIC will communicate any special uniform requests before the outings to all scouts attending. You can check out the Uniforms and Equipment page for more info on Uniforms.
Outings are only available to members of the troop unless it is a specially intended outreach outing. We have a private troop website that has calendars and dates available for all members. You can find a link to the website on the Helpful Links page, and if you are a new member/have not been added to the website yet, get in contact with a Scoutmaster, the SIC, AIC, and your patrol leader.
