Merit badges are awards centered around specific topics. Meant to increase a scout's knowledge and experience in areas that interest them, earning merit badges are required for the ranks of Star, Life, and Eagle. Scouts are required to earn a total of 14 specific badges for the rank of Eagle. A few of the badges have multiple options, where you may choose one of 2 or 3 badges to earn for that credit. Requiring these badges are all meant to ensure a varied and rich experience, and make sure that scouts learn integral life skills.
Scouting has a huge number of awards that both scouts and adults can earn. These can be earned on both the individual and the patrol level. Some are earned through requirements, some are given to those who have shown exemplary service. There are awards based off of science, service, physical achievement, camping, and many many others. TiThe Journey to Excellence is available for all Troops (or equivalent) to earn. There is a Bronze, Silver, and Gold award, based on the excellence of the unit in the specified categories. This award can be earned once every year. Click here for more info.
The Honor Patrol award is available to be earned by any patrols. This award takes place over a period of 3 months, and is led by the patrol leader. This award can be earned multiple times, and is a team effort of the patrol. Click here for a full list of requirements.
